East Germans Hijack Boat to Freedom in West Berlin
Thirteen East Germans hijacked the Friedrich Wolf, a 386 ton river excursion boat, and escaped to West Berlin with a baby and five women amid gunfire. East German police fired over 200 bullets. Police investigated three traffic accidents over two days. A 1961 Ford station wagon sustained about 95 dollars in damage after backing into a milk truck at Main and Malcolm, injuring no one. Later a 1960 Ford backed from a curb collided with a 1961 Chevrolet on Grant near Main, causing 40 dollars damage to the Ford. A 1959 Dodge truck and a 1953 Mercury collided at 318 East Main with 25 dollars damage to the truck. the Mercury suffered none.
