The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a nationwide 5 percent rise in rail freight rates starting no earlier than June 20. The move aims to offset a 10 percent wage increase from January and a 20 percent rise in health and welfare benefits this month, with no exceptions to the across the board hike. The ICC noted railroads face inflation and user demand for coal and steel inputs, and warned further changes may follow as rail finances worsen.
