Storm Toll in Kansas City Area Rises in Floods and Wind

Severe storms across central and eastern Kansas and north central Missouri produced damaging winds hail and heavy rains. At least 11 people died in highway crashes as floods and downed power lines crippled roads. Emergency evacuations occurred along Walnut River and Medicine River while Wichita Derby and Kansas City areas faced widespread flooding and wind damage.

Crash Kills Seven Near Rosalia Kansas

Seven people die in a two car collision east of Rosalia Kansas during a heavy rainstorm. Among the dead are Lyle Edward Jackson Bonnie Jackson and three of their five children from Lincoln Illinois. Also killed are two Dewell children Krista Ann and Scott and Dr Halburt L Dowell's son. Dr Dowell and Joyce Dowell are injured along with Mrs Vivian Propst and Mrs Propst's daughter. The Jackson car pulled a trailer and was struck head on after skidding on U S 54.

Area forecast notes widespread cloudiness with showers and possible thunderstorms through Sunday morning. Burnett Discharged In Bankruptcy In Kansas City

William E. Burnett son in law of the late Tom Pendergast was discharged in bankruptcy by Referee Harry F. Murphy. The discharge clears Burnett of 320598 dollars in liabilities after Murphy overruled United Pacific Insurance Co. of Tacoma Wash which objected due to a 596412 dollar default judgment against Burnett and his wife in U S District Court Kansas City Kansas last year.

Plan Skateboard Crackdown in Topeka

Topeka Mayor Charles W. Wright Jr warned of a possible crackdown on skateboard riders. He proposed a ban on skateboards on streets sidewalks and public property until a training program is provided. The mayor met with Joe Bannon to discuss supervised instruction but staff opposed it. Bannon reported 26 injuries with three surgeries from May 26 through Thursday afternoon. Wright argued roped off streets and training could reduce accidents.

Government forces hit Viet Cong hard in ambush aftermath

In Vietnam near Vinh Long, government troops with U.S. helicopter support killed 49 Viet Cong in one action. Six guerrillas captured, eight suspects taken. Four government soldiers died and four wounded. an American adviser was lightly hurt. A separate engagement north of Saigon left 18 government dead and 32 missing.

Gunmen Fire Into Home In Bogalusa Shootings

In Bogalusa Louisiana six bullets were fired into the home of Chief Deputy Doyle Holliday as investigators pursue a terrorist style murder. Holliday, who lives four miles from town, said he fired at a fleeing car with his .38 Magnum. Bullets damaged a kitchen wall an air conditioner and a breezeway wall. one shot was not found.

Youth Drowns Scuba Diving in Farlington Lake

William H. Beckett a 21 year old from Overland Park Kansas drowned while learning to scuba dive at Farlington Lake north of Girard Sheriff Bill Starkel said Beckett wearing 15 pound weight and diving gear jumped from a small boat into 40 feet of water his air line was pulled from his mouth and he cried for help Wayne Ficher 22 jumped in but Beckett went under the body was recovered Friday night by a volunteer diver.

Western posse hunts bank killer in Nebras ka

A large posse includes state troopers FBI and local police pursuing a gunman who killed three bank employees and wounded a fourth at Farmers State Bank in Big Springs Nebraska. The suspect, about 35, wore a dark suit and crew cut, looted about 1500 dollars, and fled in a 1965 car.

Calf Killed In Traffic Crash Near Erie

ERIE sheriff alerted at 7 20 p m yesterday to an accident 40 miles northeast of Erie on a county road involving a rural family and a calf. The calf darted into the road from brush and was struck by a 1960 Ford driven by John C Edwards 38 of R 3 Eric. Passengers Mrs Edwards 37 a girl 15 and a boy 14 suffered a minor head bump to the boy. Calf killed and car damage about 250 dollars.

Coin Collector dies. $13,000 saved in coins found

New York AP reports Dominick Berlingieri, 68, was found dead of natural causes in his Brooklyn apartment above a waterfront restaurant he ran for 30 years. Police say the home contained jars and cartons with $13,000 in quarters dimes and nickels.
