Six-toed Kittens Among Local Pets Attract Attention

Report by Mrs. Roy Brown notes four kittens at her home near the Fred Mullen residence. Three of the six-toed front feet walk on tiptoe while one is normal. The cats are being adopted, and the Browns have taken one.

Scooter Overturns Injures Palco Boy in Denver Hospital

A 12 year old Palco Kansas boy Rex Burgess remained in Denver hospital after a scooter overturn head injury. He is not on the serious list and his condition was described as not improving but not critical. Rex is the son of Ivan and Mrs Burgess who farm near Palco.

Blast at Hospital Evacuates Twenty Babies

Twenty babies were evacuated from a wing of Children's Memorial Hospital after a boiler exploded in the hospital power plant. Three men were slightly injured. The babies were returned to their cribs once officials confirmed no threat to the building.

Red Cross Water Safety Program Dates Set in Neosho County

The Red Cross announces a June start for water safety training at the Neosho County pool. Junior lifeguards aged 12 to 15, senior lifeguards 16 or older, and aides 14+ who passed lifesaving courses may enroll. Chanute youth enroll June 9–10. county youth start June 20 with two weeks of instruction. Enrollment fees are $1. Training runs Monday through Friday mornings.

Severe thunderstorm forecast hits southern Kansas and Oklahoma

The weather bureau issued a severe thunderstorm forecast for parts of southern Kansas and western and northern Oklahoma. Large hail and damaging surface winds are expected this afternoon from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. CST along a zone extending 60 miles either side of a line from 30 miles south of Gage Oklahoma to Chanute Kansas.

Second Half Of Taxes Due On June 20

Neosho County taxpayers must pay the second half of personal and property taxes by June 20. County treasurer Freda C. Locke reports $452,896.51 collected toward a $1,994,978.94 total. penalties apply after December 20 for first half and after June 20 for second half. Taxpayers should include a precise property description and location with payments. Delinquent taxes are published in October. personal delinquents are turned over to the sheriff after deadlines.

NASA Tests 200 U2 Weather Flights Since 1956

NASA deputy administrator Hugh Dryden told the Senate that U2 aircraft have carried weather instruments on more than 200 flights covering about 264000 miles since 1956. The missions spanned the United States Europe Turkey and Japan and were research oriented rather than spying.

Fire losses in May in Chanute reached about $1,000, bringing the year to June 1 total to $10,155 under Fire Chief C. W. Brennan. Through May the 1959 period showed $4,610 in losses, $5,545 less than the previous year, with the department making 10 runs in May including three residential alarms and three car fires.

Temporary injunction against merger blocks Gamble Skogmo plan

In Kansas City the U S District Court granted the government a temporary injunction halting the proposed merger of Gamble Skogmo Inc of Minneapolis and Western Auto Supply Co of Kansas City. The suit alleges Gamble Skogmo holds a controlling interest in Western Auto, a competitor. The injunction stems from a civil anti trust complaint against Gamble Skogmo.

In Joplin police report, 66 year old Jess Monroe Buzzard of Quapaw Oklahoma was arrested after a witness saw him taking wreaths and flowers from Hillcrest Cemetery near Galena Memorial items were found in his car and he was jailed in Cherokee County for investigation.

Addington Visits Here

W H Bill Addington of Wichita Republican governor candidate spent about three hours here visiting and distributing cards. He flew in by plane and returned to Wichita. His four point program includes free elementary textbooks higher interest on state funds deposits elimination of the personal property tax on household goods and a half million dollar fund for industrial development in southeast Kansas. Addington was a 1955 57 state highway commissioner and is completing a Legislature term. He is a World War II veteran and University of Kansas political science graduate.

Traffic Toll 367 Over Memorial Day Holiday

A three day Memorial Day period ended with 367 traffic deaths surpassing none. The toll fell short of the 375 pre holiday forecast by the National Safety Council but still added to the overall 579 deaths from boating drowning and miscellaneous accidents, exceeding the 504 record from 1947.
