Police confusion over a missing green tent ends with a found tent that does not belong to the owner. Meanwhile Tulelake California invites Kansas watermelons for a Kansas Day fair with cash prizes, honors, and trophies. Humboldt Lions send sunflower favors to Toronto.
Kansas traffic death log records fatalities in a 24 hour period up to 9 am Wednesday. The report shows 47 deaths for July 1964 compared with 43 in the prior year, with 318 deaths for the comparable period in 1963 and note that earlier fatalities were not previously reported.
Pasadena Calif AP The Ranger 7 spacecraft probably will hit its target area on the lighted side of the Moon after a successful midway maneuver. Dr William H Pickering JPL director said the 806 pound vehicle should reach a 300 mile wide plain just above the equator in the Moon’s left half. He noted analysis of tracking data is needed for hours to confirm the precise impact area. Major mid course maneuver included a 67 mile per hour kick to adjust toward the target.
A rural Chanute boy, Terry Schantz, 4, drank tile cleaner mixed with ice tea. He was pumped and released from Neosho Memorial Hospital after the incident at about 2 p.m. His half-sister Jane McGettrick helped transport him and reported he never got sick.
Hubert Mintz of 206 S Plum reported to police at 7 last night that an unidentified car passing on the right struck and damaged his 1964 Dodge as he turned from Cherry to Forest. Richard Beck, 18, of R2 identified himself as the other driver this morning and said he returned to the intersection after the accident. Beck drove a 1958 Ford owned by Leon Galemore of Yates Center. Officers arranged a meeting by Mintz with Beck and Galemore to determine damages and responsibility. Also: a Pittsburg truck struck a parked car owned by Alan Collins at 925 S Western. taillight break on a car owned by Mr and Mrs Everett Grady at 2142 E Main, and Charles W Robinson of Arkansas City paid the Grady's $5.
Bids due Thursday at 2 p.m. in the city commissioners room for proposed additions to Neosho Memorial Hospital. Plans include a pediatrics section north of the west wing and a geriatrics section with solarium west of the main east west corridor. The current north wing will be remodeled into a kitchen and cafeteria and the basement kitchen under the surgical wing will be repurposed. The hospital will be about 100 beds after work and the X ray department will be remodeled with a new diagnostic unit installed.
An intercepted letter to Cha notes a possible turn of tides as brains stay in Kansas for a space age project rather than being lured away by other opportunities. The writer signs off with a cordial closing, suggesting optimism about local developments.

TOPEKA AP reports Kansans enjoy cooler, drier air though the Weather Bureau expects a wind shift to the south Thursday with warmer temperatures. Current highs range from the 80s in the north to the 90s in the south, with Thursday's highs also forecast in the 90s.
Sen. John O. Pastore of Rhode Island was chosen as keynote speaker for the Democratic National Convention opening August 24 in Atlantic City. President Johnson approved the selection as part of efforts to consolidate support in the industrialized East against Barry Goldwater.
Dr Earl Gehrt of 19 S Rutter reported a white 1956 Chevrolet stolen from in front of his house between 8 and 9 am. The car, a four door hard top with damage to the right rear, bore license NO 2114. Report filed with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
A teen dance in Medford MA ended in a melee as about 50 Negro youths arrived without dates and a 16 year old, Joseph Sacco, was hospitalized with a head injury after a stone hit him. Police from five communities contained the fight within an hour with several buses used to disperse crowds. No arrests were reported.
The new Chanute Auto Mechanics School will open August 3 with an open house for the public all day Friday and Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The nine month program, totaling 1440 hours, leads to a diploma and is run with local and state education partners at 210 W. Main in the old Cole Motor building. Warren Babcock leads the team with secretary Darrell Finley and custodian Lew Henry. The first class will have 15 students, with a waiting list for a second class.
The University of Kansas will coordinate a 1.8 million dollar NASA radar research project on orbiting satellites. Eight university and government labs in the United States and Canada participate over three years, directed by Prof Richard K. Moore of KU Center for Research Inc. The work tests radar and radiometry gear for satellite use to map the moon’s surface, likely in 1969.
Area senators generally supported a bill to embargo imports of beef veal and mutton, despite administration opposition. The Senate approved the measure 72 to 15 with supporters including Symington Carlson Edmondson and Monroney. Pearson and Long were paired for the bill.
The zoning board of appeals granted Mrs. Floyd L. West Sr. a zoning exception to operate a Bible book store from her home at 502 S. Steuben in an R-1 district. The unanimous vote by the three members present approved the non conforming use despite absence of two board members.
GOP running mates Barry Goldwater and William E Miller spent over an hour with congressional leaders to cement party unity. Miller said they would unify the Republicans and noted a key absence, Senate Whip Kuchel, due to an eye appointment. Leaders promised a later statement as Hall prepared to join the effort. Brown said Goldwater plans Labor Day speeches, with Miller's first date August 7 in Harrisburg to address Pennsylvania GOP leaders.
Walter O Ford senior high instrumental music teacher and Neodesha native was critically burned when his motorcycle collided with a car driven by Eldon Barner of Belle Plaine and burst into flames after leaving a ditch. He was treated at St. Josephs Hospital Wichita. He had been hired to replace Leland Clapson in Chanute schools.
The Chamber of Commerce retail committee discussed a back-to-school promotion set for Aug 12 and this year’s Mexican fiesta on Sept 12 with the sidewalk bazaar on Sept 13. A follow-up meeting is planned in about two weeks to advance bazaar planning. The committee will also attend a joint city commission meeting Aug 10 where consultant planners will present a traffic study.
