Mrs Melita Welch 45 of Mulberry drowned when she stepped into a deep river hole while wading in the Neosho River south of Erie at about 2 a.m. Efforts by husband Chester Welch 47 to rescue her failed. Their son Charles 24 pulled his father from the water and later found his mother. Coroner ruled accidental drowning. The Welch family fished with others at a cabin near the trailer by the river bridge. Survived by a daughter Jacqueline McCormack and three grandchildren. Born Melita Beach October 5 1909 in Missouri. Married January 21 1934 at Girard. Body held at Pierce Funeral Home and then taken to Mulberry.

Harold Ingram a 27 year old Wichita man arrested last December on a child desertion charge was released on bond after 111 days in jail. The case was dismissed by Judge Tom Baum after the attorney failed to maintain representation and the bondsman withdrew. Ingram had signed adoption papers for the child and had spent Christmas and New Year in custody as officers sought resolution.

Frances Jewell 59 of Sutter Creek California driver and sister of Anna Curtis survived with injuries. The patrol said brake failure caused the vehicle to veer into an embankment and flip.
