Unexpected Trap Captures Two Youths
Police chased a car carrying two fugitives from Ft. Crowder disciplinary barracks to a tree and utility pole where the vehicle jammed. Don ald Vess 17 of East Liverpool Ohio and Melvin Carty 18 of Salem Indiana escaped Monday and allegedly stole five cars across Missouri Kansas and Oklahoma before being extricated. Vess was hospitalized with a back injury and Carty was jailed.

Chester Hale to Retire After 45 Years with Santa Fe
Chester Hale 65 of 115 S Denman will retire from the Santa Fe railroad August 1 after 45 years and two days of service. Born in Chanute on July 9 1892 he began in 1912 and has only missed about two weeks besides vacations. He earned two chairs and two hassocks in recognition and plans to stay around the house after retirement.

Five Chanute scouts completed a 3600 mile round trip to the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Valley Forge Pennsylvania. They passed tests in first aid compassing orienteering archery friendship exchange angling and whittling. On the return leg a compressor failure near Lexington KY and a drive shaft break near St. Louis caused delays. Scouts met many peers and interviewed Vice President Richard Nixon.
