Storm Alert Covers Wichita Area For 22 Hours

A tornado alert stretched about 22 hours in south-central Kansas as Wichita and Sedgwick County issued warnings after 15 funnel sightings. No funnels reached ground amid heavy rainfall, with sirens sounding in Wichita and eastern Sedgwick County from 1:23 p.m. to 2:05 p.m. Local reports placed funnels near Belle Plaine south of Wichita and near Andover, with another area west of Wichita.

Driver Held After Afternoon Collision and Arrest

Police investigated three accidents yesterday. Knute Erickson, 53, was charged with driving while intoxicated reckless driving and no license after colliding his 1950 Dodge panel truck with Chester Oshel’s 1957 Buick, injuring Mrs Oshel and causing $700 damage. Erickson held with $175 bond.

54 Foot Fall Fatal To Sylvia Driller

Edwin Samms 33 of Sylvia Kansas died after a 54 foot fall from an oil well rig north of Kingman. He was a foreman for Garvey Drilling Co. and is survived by his widow and two sons.

John White, of Columbus, fired on a youth prowling near his home early today, injuring Billy Vance, 19, Oswego, who was hospitalized with a serious back wound. Mrs. White reported a car circling the block before the shooting and authorities issued a pickup for a second youth believed to have been with Vance.

Seven Die in Lennox House Fire Tragedy

In Lennox California a house fire killed seven people including five children and a mother and father. Dorothy Blair 30 and her children Betty Jo Jean Hugh and Lucky perished along with Delbert Stack 28. The body of Mary Lou 4 was not found immediately. Fire officials said a cigarette may have started the blaze while victims slept. Twenty firefighters fought the flames as neighbors provided details to sheriffs detectives.

$140,000 Recovered in Pan American Jet Theft Case

The FBI recovered $140,000 stolen from a transpacific flight and arrested two Pan American ramp employees in San Francisco.
