A Chanute youth, Tommy Stone, counts 190 dead sparrows in his yard after a storm night. He found bodies beneath four trees with punctures and missing heads and guesses hail or lightning, though no signs support either. Authorities and residents await explanation for the mass kill.
A Springdale truck driver escaped injury when his rig jackknifed on slick US 59 near Erie after midnight. Carl Holman of George's Feed and Hatchery, Springdale, blamed wet pavement and crossing a railroad track for the skid that left $500 damage to the truck and minor trailer damage. The rig was hauled to Erie. Police report a separate two car crash on Cherry and Kansas caused $400 damage. Roy Kirkpatrick and Charles Midcap each saw about $200 damage to their vehicles. James Midcap was cited for allowing a minor to drive with a restricted license.
Washington officials say no new draft orders yet and the August call of 8 000 remains the basis for current increases. Astronaut Gus Grissom was forced to blow the escape hatch and swim about 70 feet as the Liberty Bell 7 sank in the Atlantic 16 minutes after launch from Cape Canaveral. A Marine helicopter rescued him. the capsule later sank to 16,800 feet as crews tried to recover it.
Kansas City man Paul E. O Malley, 47, died from injuries after a Turnpike crash. His sister Alice K. Arnold, 53, of Junction City, was killed in the same collision on Tuesday when their car struck a bridge.
