Electric engines for space flights succeed in test launch
At Wallops Island, Va, NASA flew two small electric rocket engines designed for interplanetary travel. The craft looped about 2,500 miles aloft for nearly an hour before landing in the Atlantic 2,000 miles east of Wallops. One engine operated successfully during the mission.

Rate Cut Okay TOPEKA Kansas Gas and Electric rate cut approved
The Kansas Corporation Commission approved an 807000 annual rate reduction for Kansas Gas and Electric Co effective with September bills. Urban all electric homes see lower winter charges and water heating rates at one cent per kilowatt hour with separate meters. Rural home rates also reduced for winter. General service and industrial rates cut. large customers may receive adjustments. Kansas Gas and Electric serves about 160 cities in 22 counties in southeastern Kansas.

Don Marple Truck Destroyed by Fire
A 1958 Chevrolet truck owned and driven by Don Marple was a total loss after a fire Saturday evening. Marple escaped with no injury while the blaze started a grass fire kept under control by local farmers ten miles west of Chanute.

City to Open Bids On Streets and Pickup
The city will open bids at 7 30 p m next Monday for street improvements on several blocks including widening Ist between Lincoln and Evergreen and Santa Fe on the east side between 1st and 2nd and surfacing. The project aims to add parking by changing from parallel to angle spots and six blocks of residential paving. At 10 a m Friday bids will be opened for a new half ton pickup for the electric department with a 1951 International to be traded in.

Car Damage In Mishaps Involving Several Local Cars

Weekend Rioting In Packed Harlem Ghetto
In Harlem over a hot weekend missiles rained from roofs as crowds rushed barricades and fists and knives flashed. Police gunfire erupted as one Black man was shot dead and more than 100 people were injured, including about twenty five patrolmen. Plate glass shattered and over twenty stores were looted with a supermarket losing $2000 cash, 200 cartons of cigarettes and 50 cases of beer.

Anniversary Of Battle With Indians Observed In Kansas
In Lyons Kansas AP observers marked the 100th anniversary of a six day 1864 clash on the Santa Fe Trail when 104 pioneers repelled 600 hostile Indians. Descendants attended near the battlefield five miles west of Lyons. Water wells and the old depression were noted from the siege as Mrs Homer Ryland of Odessa Missouri a daughter of a fighter joined the observance.
