U.S. Beef Demand Prompts Land Conversion Plan

The Agriculture Department warns beef demand will rise over seven years requiring 99.5 million cattle and about 14 million extra acres of grazing land annually. Current cropland conversion to grazing may fall short, with 10 million acres next year and 40 million by 1970, leaving a gap to be filled. Government payments support converting crops to grazing. Cattle prices are expected to rise later this year.
