SAN FRANCISCO AP Senator Barry Goldwater promised to enforce the civil rights act and not seek its repeal. He said he would go beyond it to end discrimination if elected president. The audience gave standing ovations as he spoke before the Republican Platform Committee.
The 91st Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in Erie Kansas runs next week with Kids Day on Tuesday featuring turtle and sack races. Free concerts by Katy Concert Band and XLs, dances at Legion Hall, and Bean Night Friday with eight hundred pounds of beans, coffee, and bread. A KOAM-TV 49er will perform Saturday, closing events with a Legion Hall dance.
Newport Tennessee reports grim results after a United Air Lines Viscount turboprop crash near the Great Smoky Mountains. All 39 aboard died as investigators and National Guard units gathered wreckage, with bodies and fragments removed to a municipal morgue. The Philadelphia to Huntsville flight stopped in Washington and Knoxville before crashing in good weather.

Scattered thunderstorms will return to Kansas tonight with moisture across the state, western Kansas tonight, eastern sections Saturday morning. Highs today upper 80s to around 100, lows tonight mid 60s to low 70s. Thursday highs 85 Topeka to 100 Garden City, lows 61 Goodland to 73 Wichita. Radar showed showers Thursday night in western and central Kansas with no rainfall reports received.
Elvin D. Mauk of Humboldt, about 30, was critically injured when the motorcycle he rode collided with a car in Humboldt city limits around 8 45 p m yesterday. He was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital Chanute by ambulance and listed in critical condition. Police say investigators are ongoing and the driver's name and findings remain withheld. The crash occurred in front of a Texaco service station on US 169 highway through Humboldt.
An intercepted note from Nute suggests new reading machines will require kindergarten teachers to become electronic experts as well. The fragment hints at evolving classroom technology and teacher training needs.
A $30,451 Office of Education grant was awarded to the University of Kansas for cooperative research on reading achievements of first grade pupils. Sen. Frank Carlson noted the funds.
AP reports in Chicago that a 5 cent stamp letter from Harry S. Albin took 57 days to cross the street. John Segal, who received it, found four unusual stamps and a note saying the letter arrived in Brazil by mistake. Albin’s printing office sits at 1223 S Wabash while Segal’s is 1139 S Wabash. The piece mentions the newly included ZIP code in the address.
Walter H. Peery state treasurer campaigned in Chanute today for re election to a third term on the Republican ticket. He renewed acquaintances and met with local business leaders to build support.
Neosho County's 1964 population totals show a countywide decline from 19 455 in 1963 to 19 295. Chanute and St Paul rise, with Chanute from 10 508 to 10 532 and St Paul to 765. Erie, Galesburg, Thayer, and Earlton fall notably. Big Creek and Grant townships gain while Lincoln and Tioga townships see the largest declines.
Washington AP reports the Senate met for 12 seconds to adjourn until July 20 for the Republican National Convention. Senator Lee Metcalf of Montana read the order and struck the gavel, setting an all-time brevity record after a previous two‑second session last December.
President Johnson announced 50 FBI agents will be permanently assigned to a new FBI office in Jackson Mississippi opening today. He spoke at a Cabinet Room news conference about additional agents sent to Mississippi after the disappearance of three civil rights workers.
Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived in Chicago for a seven hour layover en route to the San Francisco Republican National Convention. He rode in a private car on the Broadway Limited, then an added switch engine shuttled the car to Dearborn Street Station for a 22 car Santa Fe train to the West Coast. Gen. Schulz said Eisenhower would work in his car, may meet Charles H. Percy, and possibly Earl Eisenhower, while maintaining neutrality in the Goldwater Scranton contest.
McPherson county officials seek the driver of a fuel transport truck that crossed a 29 foot timber and steel bridge south of Marquette. The crash crushed one bridge side and caused it to sag, requiring replacement. County engineer Francis Rankin notes the damage and ongoing search.
State Bank Commissioner J O Wilson issued a call for the condition of state banks and trust companies as of June 30. The comptroller of the currency and the FDIC also issued calls for condition statements as of June 30 for insured state banks and all national banks. The Federal Reserve issued its call for all member banks.
Arlene Del Fava a 27 year old secretary says she will use a police whistle to attract men and summon help if attacked after a mugging. She bought the whistle Thursday following a Sunday mugging during which she stabbed the assailant with a switchblade and was charged with anti weapons violations. Police noted switchblades are outlawed and she would have been cleared if using an ordinary knife or hat pin.
A nine page unsigned letter, identified as Anderson’s handwriting, claims Dick W. C. Anderson lied on court testimony about the Mrs. Thompson murder. He says he burglarized the home and “went crazy” after the victim woke, aligning with earlier details but seeking to clear conscience. The letter, confiscated in Stillwater Prison, is held by the Minnesota attorney general’s office and could affect appeals for T. Eugene Thompson and Norman Mastrian.
In Oklahoma City a 10-year-old girl, Laurie Werthessen, wrote to the sonic booms office after a boom shattered her curtain rod and broke her Chinese charm bracelet. The rod fell on her arm and she asked for compensation. Douglas Doyle, acting operations manager, said staff cut red tape and paid Laurie $1.50.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic death log shows 2 hours to 9 am Friday 1 death for July 16, 1964, compared with 281 in the comparable 1963 period and 312 for the same period overall.
Senator Barry Goldwater urged platform drafters toward Republican unity at the final platform committee hearing in San Francisco. He said he would not dictate plank content and stressed a philosophy of a free society at home and strength abroad while reacting to criticism from Governor William Scranton.
