Herman W. Westmeyer of Kansas State University notes the final finishing pounds are the most costly for cattle feeders. As cattle near Good to Choice grades, feed per pound of gain rises from 7.7 to 8.8, then to 18.1 pounds after 56 days post Choice. He urges marketing at the target grade to maximize efficiency and stabilize beef supply amid higher weights and ongoing market pressure.

Brown Grass Due to Heat

Kansas State University horticulturist C. W. Derting explains that brown grass in cool season grasses like bluegrass fescue and rye is caused by high temperatures, not lack of water or fertilizer. He advises no fertilizer from June 1 to fall, mowing at 2 1/2 inches for cool seasons, and frequent mowing of warm season grasses like bermuda and zoysia at about one inch. Remove clippings to prevent thatch and improve water penetration.
