In Russell Kansas two youths Phillip Ireton and Marshall Burke attempted a jail break to free Paul Conway. Sheriff Milton Garyardt thwarted the plan after Ireton fired six shots at the sheriff and hijacked a car with a woman hostage. The ensuing chase ended with a wreck 27 miles northeast of Russell. both Ireton and Burke were captured and are in satisfactory condition.

James Lindsay Injured In Hit-and-Run Crash
James E. Lindsay, 31, of 1415 W and is treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a hit and run crash along US 169 three miles north of Chanute. Lindsay suffered serious lacerations, back and leg injuries when his car was struck and pushed into a tree. A late model pickup truck registered to Wesley O identified by Kenneth Rose of Humboldt was linked to the incident. The pursuit by troopers followed the crash found the vehicle multiple miles away.
