Garnett Kansas faced a weekend surge of 3000 youths attracted by a sports car meet. Police arrested 44 college age youths, mostly for disturbing the peace, with some charged for intoxicated driving and assaulting officers. Bail ranged from 50 to 200 dollars as crowds protested a miscommunicated free dance.
Chanute police logged a busy Fourth of July weekend with DWI and reckless driving charges. Notable incidents include Ralph P. Lane from Wichita and Jim Cushman of Santa Fe facing DWI charges, keywords such as fireworks injuries to Kristen Skinner, and a mass youth gathering near the power plant with multiple arrests and bonds totaling over four thousand dollars. The Heart of Atlanta Motel Corp asks a federal court to bar enforcement of the public accommodations portion of the Civil Rights Act. A two car crash five miles east of Chanute on K-39 at 10 15 p m yesterday killed 55 year old Cecile McGuffey who rode as a passenger in a 1949 Chevrolet driven by her husband Plyle McGuffey 60 of Route 3 The other vehicle 1957 Ford driven by Danny Warren Wade 22 with passenger Phyllis Logan 22 both of 910 South Forest suffered injuries Wade and Logan listed as hurt with Wade's arm and nose fractured and Logan with abrasions and bruises. The accident remains under investigation with conflicting reports on McGuffey's condition and the extent of others injuries.
Six Kansas GOP leaders met with Henry Cabot Lodge in Wichita to discuss foreign policy civil rights and party matters as Lodge seeks more delegate support for Gov William Scranton. Delegates Mollinger Williams and McGill said the talks did not change their minds Goldwater was discussed with regard to civil rights voting records.

Highland Park reports dogs killed 10 young mallard ducks Saturday night. Earlier a separate incident saw 19 pheasants destroyed when dogs dug under a pen. City ordinance bans dogs roaming, with fines from 5 to 100 dollars. The hatchery, set up in the former deer pen, raises wild turkeys, partridges, peacocks and pheasants before housing them at Santa Fe park.

The Associated Press reports 486 deaths in traffic accidents across the nation during a 78 hour Fourth of July weekend from 6 p.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday local time.
Ron Poor has been named fund chairman for the Neosho County Division of the American Red Cross. The countywide drive begins September 21, excluding Chanute where the unit is under the United Fund Drive. The county outside Chanute targets $2,797 for 1265 needs. Poor is the son of Mr and Mrs Walter Poor and is a Chanute high school and Kansas State University graduate who has worked as a farm representative for the Bank of Commerce.
Kansas State University will pursue a $58 065 two year study funded by the USDA Agricultural Research Service to test linseed oil coatings on concrete. Dr Cecil H Best and Charles H Scholer will lead field tests to see if linseed oil preserves mixing water during curing and enhances durability and surface strength.
