Chanute reports few injuries from Independence Day celebrations but several complaints about youths lighting firecrackers on porches. Firemen battled a recurring tree blaze at City Park and responded to a car fire on 401 S. Ashby with undetermined cause. A porch roof steam incident at 709 S. Highland was non hazardous.
Altoona Days, born from the town centennial, became a permanent event with Friday and Saturday activities. Miss Altoona honors went to Denice Collins with Darla Dawn Waggoner as princess. Contests centered on ticket sales. proceeds of 1059 funded festival costs. Winners included Ponderosa Cafe float and Leslie Ann Sharratt, Jason Head, and Billy Perkins in the parade.

Altamont organizer James Gaskell said a See-Kan RC&D led meeting on a nine county juvenile detention center in Parsons was postponed due to conflicts. The rescheduled 8 p.m. meeting will be held Thursday in the Neosho County courthouse at Erie with several steering and RC&D committee members expected.
The Salvation Singers, 33 members, depart Humboldt for Dallas to perform July 8 at the Dallas Convention Center in Ralph Carmichael's Natural High. They raise 2500 for expenses under director Rev. Glenn Kirby, with meals en route and church gigs, plus a program with former Miss America Vonda Kay Van Dyke.

C R A Inc a Farmland Industries unit announces a multi million dollar Coffeyville Kansas refinery expansion. Work starts this fall with completion due August 1972 and includes sulfur contaminant removal. Initial capacity about 10 800 barrels daily, potential rise to 19 200 barrels. Platforming unit up from 6 000 to 8 600 barrels per day.
A Renoir titled Le Pecheur a la Ligne, painted in 1874, sold at Christie’s in London for 1,159,200 dollars. John Mitchell and Sons bought the work, which shows a man fishing and a woman reading, initially bought for about 35 dollars in Paris in 1875.
The first two finishers in the 25th annual Powder Puff Derby were expected to arrive at Ryan Airport Baton Rouge after a 2400 mile flight from Calgary Canada. Ramonia Stoat and Charlene Poe of Ft. Smith Arkansas led the field while Marion Jayne and Mimi Stigg of Palatine Illinois followed. the winner would be known Friday.

The 61 people and 54 mules of a Santa Fe trail mule train rested in Larned Kansas Monday night before continuing to Lyons today. The caravan will press on to Burlingame Kansas on Wednesday as part of its journey from New Mexico to Shawnee Mission.
In Cameron Missouri a special election centers on liquor by the drink after the 26th amendment. Residents Steve Griffin and Jennifer Davis camp on the courthouse grounds hoping to be the first 18 year olds to vote under the new law.
At least 84 people were treated in Kansas City area hospitals during the Fourth of July weekend for fireworks injuries. Four were hospitalized with eye burns. Joseph Sannipole, 7, and Patrick Kindle, 11, required eye-surgery for their injuries.
At Montreal the North Atlantic fares conference of the International Air Transport Association discusses a roundtrip transatlantic fare near 200 dollars paid 90 to 120 days in advance. The plan seeks to win back business lost to low fare charter lines.
