A proposed 48 unit elderly apartment complex in Chanute would open if 96 local residents express interest. Environmentalists oppose Alaska gas pipeline to lower 48

Environmental advisers urged President Carter to recommend against building any natural gas pipeline across Alaska to deliver fuel to the continental United States. They conceded a compelling need might justify the Alcan route, which would run alongside the Alaska oil pipeline to Fairbanks and then along the Alaska Highway through Canada to the northern United States. Carter planned to send Congress a Sept 1 recommendation on Alaska gas supply options for consumers nationwide.

Drug raids net 22 suspects as Fourth of July crackdown looms

Shawnee County Sheriff’s deputies and city officers, with Kansas Bureau of Investigation help, conducted large raids Thursday night and Friday morning. Twenty two suspects were seized with 18 on warrants for sale and the rest for possession. Marijuana hashish speed cocaine and heroin were seized. Detentions followed months of investigations with more arrests expected over the Independence Day weekend.
