Chanute fire chief C. W. Brennan reported six June fire calls for the city, fewer than last year, with 77 total runs for the first six months compared to 95 in the prior period. Rainy weather and the city trash collection program reduced fires. losses in June were minor.

Woman Injured In Car Mishap Near Chanute

Mrs. William M. Matlock twenty one was critically injured when a 1951 Henry J. two door car wrecked on a country road northwest of Chanute Thursday at about 545 pm. Her husband William Matlock suffered a left arm bruise. Their son Ronnie Crawford five was uninjured. An attending physician said Mrs. Matlock has internal chest injuries. Sheriff Lee Montgomery and Assistant Police Chief Lige Matlock investigated. The accident occurred as Matlock drove about 50 mph hitting a rough spot and rolling the car into a ditch. Mrs. Matlock was thrown from the first roll and was taken to a nearby hospital by Clyde Tunnell.

Self Service Grocery expands with two-building remodel plan

Removal of the wall next week will open space for a larger self service store with meat, produce, dairy, frozen foods and ice cream. Kansas City reports the Truman family confirmed that a Columbus firm bought 105 acres of its Grandview farmland for a shopping center. The buyer is Don M Casto and Casto Jr. Developers formerly connected to Harry S Truman and his siblings Mary Jane Truman and J Vivian Truman completed the deal. Soldier Killed In Army Truck Crash At Fort Riley

Private Arthur Clark of Vicksburg Mississippi died when an Army truck failed to make a curve and slid down an embankment near Fort Riley Kas. The incident occurred yesterday and the deceased was listed as a serviceman from Mississippi.
