Symington Sees Soviet ICBM Lead Even With Planned U.S. Build
Sen. Stuart Symington argues in a Senate speech that Moscow will have four times as many ICBMs as the Eisenhower plan by 1961 and that the administration is widening the gap. He says the U.S. could outproduce the Soviet Union if funded, while McElroy counters no evidence Russia leads in deployable ICBMs and dismisses 300-ship projections. The defense secretary testifies the budget funds essential programs and the nation is prepared to meet today’s threat.

Living Costs Dip In December
Prices fell two tenths of one percent in December marking the first decline since August. Lower costs for food, autos, and clothing offset higher rents and medical care as the Bureau of Labor Statistics places the index at 123.7 of the 1947-49 base, 1.7 percent above December 1957. About 700,000 workers on quarterly and semiannual pay scales will not see a pay change.

Royster Junior High cancels annual carnival
Royster Junior High will not host its school carnival planned for February 6. A ten member committee representing all three grades voted yesterday to cancel after only about half the student body offered to help, sacrificing about 1000 dollars typically raised by the Student Council. Principal Paul Parsons praised the decision as courageous and in the students’ best interests. Karen Kreider, committee chair, said the choice was between begging for help or canceling the event.
