The Inquiring Reporter asks Chanute residents what single improvement would most benefit the city in 1967. Answers include expanding parking lots and sidewalks, adding a shopping center, converting to a four year college, removing liquor stores, eliminating parking meters, and cleaning up north Grant.
Governor Robert Docking urged expanded vocational education to boost economic security for Kansans. He told the Kansas Vocational Association that counselors must stress vocational paths and start at junior high, noting Kansas manufacturing should grow 50 percent 1960 to 1975 while national growth lags. Erie Neosho county commissioners bought a four wheel drive loader from Fort Scott for 8300 dollars to handle road materials. The purchase aims to boost material handling at county roads division.
Air Force investigators examined the wreckage of a KC135 jet tanker that crashed in the foothills of Mt. Spokane, killing nine airmen. The crash site is in Spokane Washington area.
Government official Arthur M. Ross of the Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 1967 consumer price rise of about 2.5 percent, slower than 1966's 3.3 percent peak. Food costs may rise around 2 percent, clothing about half of last year’s gain, while December 1966 CPI finished at 114.7 with overall living costs up due to housing, clothing, and medical care.
Ann Johnson, 35, of Kansas City, was shot to death early today at the On the Beam tavern after an argument over money. Police hold 42 year old George Caldwell in connection with the shooting. The tavern has seen three fatal shootings since Christmas with a gun battle on December 26 leaving two men dead.
Mrs. Cora Melton, 46, of Coffeyville Kansas, was given a year in prison suspended and placed on three years probation after pleading guilty in U S District Court to receiving stolen property. The federal sentence runs concurrently with a five to ten year burglary sentence she is serving at the Kansas industrial farm for women in Lansing. Her son Richard and daughter in law Patricia were named in the August burglary case involving the First State Bank of Edna and a post office break in at South Mound.
Topeka reported 24 hour traffic death count up to 9 a.m. Saturday for January 21 1967. Comparable 1966 period recorded 18 deaths.
Four drivers were cited after police conducted three radar speed checks on Main Street last night.
Area forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures through Sunday. Tonight lows near 40 with Sunday highs in the middle 60s. Topeka says Kan sas will have variable cloudiness and warm temps with most skies mostly clear by noon.

A four year old boy Phillip Anthony Gutierrez of 104 S Steuben was struck by a car while crossing near his home around 5 p.m. He suffered pelvis and hip fractures and possible internal injuries. The vehicle was a 1963 Pontiac driven by Henry S Biggs 59 of 415 N Garfield. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Police held a teen temporarily after he was seen inspecting parked cars. He was later released to his parents. Officers say he has lived in Chanute and is known locally, but his home is now in Fredonia.
