The Neosho Memorial Hospital board opened bids on an out-patient addition and discussed a possible obstetrics wing expansion and a new bed wing. Plans include central air, monolithic concrete construction, and a 90 day decision on the obstetrics alternates with financing from a reserve fund.
An Avianca flight from New York to Colombia crashed on approach to Montego Bay. 37 Americans died including Thomas C. Capehart and his wife Nancy, relatives of Senator Homer Capellart. Four crew and six others survived as two engines detached and the jet burned for two hours. The disaster marks a major early 1960s air tragedy with multiple fatalities nationwide.
Executive editor of the Kansas City Star C G Wellington died aboard the Empress of England during a Caribbean cruise at age 69. He had worked for the Star since 1916 and led the paper as executive editor since 1954. His death followed prior abdominal surgery in 1958. He is survived by wife and several children, including sons in Kansas newspapers. He urged concise, vigorous writing and mentored many reporters. Wellington also held leadership in journalism associations and was born in Salina Kansas.
Beneficial Standard Life Insurance Co. sent $120 000 to the son and daughter of Dr. Joe Gibbons and his wife Alva of Van Nuys California. The payout follows their deaths in a Gulf of Mexico airliner crash on November 17.
A mother Mrs. Donce B. Lewis of Matfield Green and her two daughters Marelena 5 and a seven month old died when two trucks and a car collided on an icy stretch of U S 50 six miles east of Cottonwood Falls. The husband was injured and treated at Emporia hospital in good condition. Harold Steadman 23 of Cottonwood Falls and Gardner Wilson 39 of Hutchinson sustained minor injuries. Wilson drove for Consolidated Rebuilders of Hutchinson and was en route to Kansas City with 20 000 pounds of rebuilt engines.

A 13 month old girl, Susan Klem, died after swallowing turpentine. She was rushed to a hospital but died despite medical efforts Wednesday in Kansas City Kansas AP reports.
