Hollywood AP reports Cecil B DeMille renowned director of celebrated epics died today at age 77 from a heart attack. He helped found Hollywood and became a legend in his era.
Arrangements for Humboldt Rotary to join Chanute for a joint meeting tonight were canceled because of highway conditions. Chanute club president Carl Pate said the Chanute meeting will proceed as planned and that the scheduled speaker Doane R. Farr of Clinton, Oklahoma, is not expected to attend after contact issues.
President Eisenhower told reporters that the United States will not be pushed around in pursuing world peace after meeting Anastas Mikoyan. He also indicated he favors repealing the constitutional ban on a third term, though he would not seek one himself.
Twenty six Chanute businesses agreed to host local teachers for the Chamber of Commerce Business Education Day on March 18. Les Matthews says more firms may join as planning continues and about 20 people attended a pre tour briefing at the Tioga Hotel. The tour will run in groups by firm size, with Wendell Bowyer heading the education committee. In Neosho County two 39 year old men, Virgil Waggoner of Galesburg and O E Fones of Erie, are noted as holdovers from the pre mechanical age of farming.
The Imperial passenger train was in its third accident in two days. A collision with a truck at Haviland killed four telephone linemen. A second crash northeast of Guymon, Oklahoma, left car driver John Behne, 68, dead. Two hours later a third crash near Liberal injured driver C. D. Wash, 28, who was treated and released.
Kansas City barbers voted to raise haircut prices to 1.75 dollars ending a 1955 level of 1.50 dollars. Nearly all of about 400 barbers at the meeting supported the hike and also voted to close their shops two days a week.
A severe winter storm eased across Kansas bringing up to 8 inches of snow. Temperatures fell to 9 below zero at Goodland with 50 mph winds and drifts 5 to 6 feet. Highways opened but hazardous travel persisted as schools closed and many towns reported freezing rain and sleet in the south.
Congressman Denver D. Hargis announced a new Third District liaison office in Parsons to improve contact with residents. The 1813 Main Street site, under Mrs. Ruth Comstock, aims to provide information and gather citizen needs for better constituent service.
Three youths escaped from the Boys Industrial School at Topeka Monday night and were held in the Emporia city jail today. They were caught yesterday about 40 miles south of Emporia in a stolen car. The boys are Jerry Wisegarver 16 Topeka Herbert Dean Vance 14 and Frank Ogle 15 both of Chanute.
A car truck crash on icy U S 169 eight miles north of Iola killed John W Farran 59 Parsons. His wife Edna Farran 54 suffered a fractured ankle and scalp wounds. Truck driver E M Nichels from near Iola was uninjured.
AP reports all major Kansas roads open this morning though three routes remain closed in the northeast. K-4 and K-16 reopened. K-74, K-192, and K-113 still blocked. Snow, drifting, and one way traffic persist in several areas with zero visibility on U. S. 54 and U. S. 75 in the southeast. Six inches of snow observed in Miami and Anderson counties. Stockpiled sand exhausted as crews battle icing and wind driven snow.
D E Jones 38 year old Corsicana filling station attendant claimed to have found 86 bars of gold in eastern Texas but then told Secret Service officers there was no gold after a lie detector test. Agents said the admission came during the Dallas office probe into the multimillion dollar cache tale sparked by Lee Wasser.
Kansas traffic fatalities listed by state accident records show 23 deaths so far in 1959, matching the same period in 1958 at 23. The report covers Topeka figures and notes fatalities over the last 24 hours.
Herbert J. Wood 18 of 809 S Ash by suffered minor head lacerations in a one car crash 2.3 miles south of Thayer at 12:30 pm yesterday. He drove a 1953 Ford on US 169 left the highway and struck a bridge abutment. The car was demolished and Wood was taken to his home by the Highway Patrol.
Lawrence AP reports Senator Andrew F. Schoeppel will headline the Kansas Republican Veterans Club luncheon in Topeka on Kansas Day January 29. The event marks a political observance with emphasis on state pride and veteran support.
Three inches of new snow plus ice on streets prompted the closure of several area schools. In Chanute, all Chanute schools opened but with high absenteeism, while Altoona Erie Midway and Stark reported closures. Countywide telecommunication outages and drifting snow grounded travel, with reports of carbon monoxide exposure in a local home and extensive ice damage to power lines and meters.
A coroner's jury in Wichita ruled Forrest Don McCuiston 36 died from a personal safety related wound in a bomb blast at Wichita Municipal Airport on October 17. The verdict found the death to be by own action after five hours of testimony and an eight minute deliberation.
