Governor Fred Hall proposes a one shot plan to finance high school aid using a $7 800 000 balance in the elementary school aid fund. The plan would advance May sales tax transfers to February to free funds for next distributions, with a caveat about sufficient revenue and no balance remaining after that year.
The L. E. Stump estate sees three of four properties sold by sealed bids. Quentin Nelson bought the Twin Lakes cabin and retreat on K39 west of 99 school, likely for a group. Elmer Ladd and his wife acquired the rental at 319 W Fourth, while L. P. Burris purchased a paved lot on S Grant. The business building at 101 S Grant remains unsold with two bids.
A 19 year old Texas airman Bobby E. Burgett stationed at Carswell Air Force Base Fort Worth was killed in a two car collision west of Greensburg Kansas. His bride of four days Mary Ann Burgett 21 was critically injured and hospitalized at Kiowa County Memorial Hospital. The other driver Lynn Kelly 32 Wichita Kansas was hospitalized with an injured vertebra.
A 65yearold mother Mrs Orana Hughes and her 12yearold daughter Sharon Hughes were found shot to death in their rural Herington home four miles east of town. County coroner Dr J E Bowers labeled it murder and death by own action noting a note from the mother about health fears for herself and Sharon in the future.
Topeka reports deaths on Kansas highways rose to 611 in 1954, tying the state record set three years earlier. The State Highway Department notes 1953 saw 579 fatalities, marking a significant rise.
Two year old Elizabeth Ann Cherry died yesterday from burns suffered in a January 12 home fire. Parents Bracey H Cherry Jr and wife are named in initial reports.

Julius Bohannon, an escaped three time killer, was captured near Tahlequah Oklahoma without a fight shortly after daylight following a search by 50 officers. Bohannon broke from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary at McAlester on January 8 and was found unarmed hiding in an abandoned shack southwest of Tahlequah.
The Rev. T. Malcom Jones, 49, pastor of Christ Episcopal Church, was killed in an overnight dispute in Las Vegas. Raymond P. Smith, 51, a longtime friend, was arrested and booked for investigation of murder.
Mahlon Morley announced a county-wide conservation meeting for farmers and interested persons in 1955 to be held at Erie next Monday. The session starts at 1 20 p m in the courtroom of the county courthouse.
In a light moment at the National Security Council, President Eisenhower was surprised with an eight volume set The Great Centuries of Painting, a gift from Cabinet members marking his third year in office. Mrs. Eisenhower also received a Romberg records album as a early Valentine.
A bill in the state Senate by Sen. Wilfrid Cavaness would establish district court sessions in Neosho county at Chanute in addition to Erie. The move aims to cut travel and witness burden since most cases, jurors, and attorneys are centered in Chanute. Memorial Building room space is prepared for court use.

A new storm tracking into Kansas may add to the snow cover across most of the state. Forecaster Tom Arnold says daytime drizzle will turn to snow in the west and north tonight and persist through Friday with rain in the southeast. Dr. Lloyd J. Michael, 46, a Spring Hill veterinarian, was killed when his station wagon was struck by a Missouri-Kansas-Texas passenger train at a crossing in Ochel-Tree, Kansas. The accident occurred today and details are pending.
An all day Tioga Hotel meeting in Southeast Kansas focused on fertilizer use to boost crop production. About 40 attendees including farm agents farmers and cooperative managers attended with a luncheon. Mahlon Morley Neosho County agent and Russell Klotz Labette County agent led discussions on soil testing and local fertilizer results. The event was sponsored by the Consumers Cooperative Association and local cooperatives.
Kansas state accident records show fatalities in the last 24 hours near Topeka. The data lists totals to date and figures for the same period in 1954, reflecting yearly trend in traffic deaths.

Dr Samuel Sheppard attends his father Richard A Sheppard’s burial near a lagoon in Sunset Memorial Park. The 64-year-old man died after his wife Ethel shot herself Jan 7. Samuel, 81, under guard, faces murder conviction appeals in the July 4 bludgeon murder case of his pregnant wife Marilyn.
