Kevin Barry wandered from his Kansas City home during a bitter 19 degree night. His mother Faye Barry searched rooms and called police before hearing a small voice from a dresser drawer. He was tucked beneath his sister’s dresses, safe but hidden in the room.
Sen James B Pearson R Kan says he is gratified by Agriculture Secretary Clifford Hardins modification to the set aside program for 1971. He credits the change with preventing mass plowing of grassland and allowing continuity in farm programs and plans already made for the current year.
Doctors said Senator Richard B. Russell 73 of Georgia worsened overnight and is now in critical condition. He has been hospitalized since December 8 for a respiratory ailment and has long suffered from emphysema complicating his breathing.

Swiss officials opened investigations into two disasters near Zurich. A Bulgarian four engine airliner crashed on approach, killing 35 and leaving a Soviet pilot and a 12 year old Israeli boy as survivors. A separate head on train collision near Meilen killed six and critically injured nine, likely caused by a switching malfunction.
HEW will terminate a major portion of federal matching welfare funds to Indiana and Nebraska starting April 1 for failing to raise AFDC maximum grants as required by federal law. Indiana loses 39 million dollars and Nebraska 15 million annually. California action was halted after Reagan promised court action.

James and Judith McMullen pleaded innocent to marijuana possession charges in separate arraignments. Judith’s motion to dismiss was overruled, trial set for Feb 23 in Erie. James’s motions were overruled, trial set for Feb 9 in Erie. James remains in custody. Judith is on bond.
Ed Powers, 31, a printer for the Erie Record, died from a back head gunshot after a Friday night incident at his wife’s parents home. Police were told at 11:03 p.m. by Ora Lea Powers and he died at Allen County Hospital after 12:30 a.m. Saturday. No arrests had been made as investigators continued efforts.
South Vietnamese paratroopers with U.S. helicopter gunships raided an apparent prisoner of war camp inside Cambodia. They found the camp empty but captured 30 enemy soldiers. The raid, led by Lt. Gen. Do Cao Tri, lasted about three hours on Sunday with no casualties and described as successful.
Hans Herold was named president of the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce for 1971 by the board. He succeeds Wilbur Allison. Clifford Gibson becomes vice president and John Barr is treasurer. Gibson moves up from treasurer. Installation set for the annual membership meeting on February 16.
