Downtown Chanute residents and officials discuss preventing traffic fatalities. Speakers urge stricter enforcement of existing laws, tougher driver licensing rules, sobriety penalties, and possible speed limit measures to curb deadly crashes.
A three day federal inspection of historic sites in southeast Kansas ended Friday. Herbert E Kahler said a preservation report will be drafted for study. Fort Scott civic leaders seek national historical monument status for the frontier fort. Other sites visited include Mound City linked to John Brown, a ravine at Trading Post tied to a Civil War massacre, and Mine Creek battle site where Gen. Sterling Price was defeated October 6, 1863.

In Kinston and Fayetteville the Goldwater campaign reports a solid Southern base. Washington AP The Defense Department’s top medical officers may decide next week on a unified line of action regarding cigarette smoking among 2.7 million service members. Dr Shirley C Fisk health director will meet with Army Navy and Air Force surgeons general to discuss the Public Health Service link between smoking and cancer and other diseases and to outline recommendations to their service secretaries. The meeting aims to shape a possible common policy though no new directives are guaranteed.
Topeka AP reports springlike highs of 55 to 60 this afternoon across Kansas. A cool front arrives tonight, dropping Sunday highs to 40 to 45 in the west and around 50 in the east. No significant precipitation expected. Friday's highs ranged from 46 at Chanute to 60 at Hutchinson, with morning lows from 20 at Manhattan to 31 at Concordia.
Mrs. Ella Gants, turning 100, asked for a brass band and the 4th Division band from Ft. Lewis appeared on her nursing home lawn in Tacoma. She thanked Maj. Gen. Claire E. Hutchin and said she would remember the fort’s commander in her prayers.
A first aid class will be offered here by the Kansas Highway Patrol in cooperation with the Erie fire department starting next Thursday. Trooper Richard will lead a five week course with 25 enrollees including Erie fire department members and Boy Scouts. The public may attend Thursdays at 7 30 p.m. for five weeks.
Anthony DeAngelis and Joseph Lomascio, linked to a $100 million vegetable oil scandal, are jailed after bail reductions. DeAngelis faces charges of defrauding Harbor Tank Storage Co. of about $46.5 million and Lomascio is charged similarly. Prosecutors allege false Harbor Tank receipts funded Allied Oil loans. The case cites misreported tank contents and broad bankruptcy fallout affecting more than 50 companies.

Additional classes include furniture refinishing, electric arc welding, and a hobby woodworking class taught by Crissman Crassman. electronics repairs are not offered due to lack of facilities. Enrollment requires minimum numbers and fees apply.
Mary Costa says her director husband Frank Tashlin, 52, and she have separated but not legally. She notes they have been separated on and off since last May. Costa, 33, recently earned acclaim in La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera.
President Johnson told his all male Cabinet that the government is not fully using women's brainpower. He urged promotions beyond men in upper bracket jobs and ordered departments to assess the situation with input from Esther Peterson and Elizabeth Carpenter. Peterson said the briefing found a skilled reservoir of educated women. Johnson stressed merit and ideas over sex in policy making.
Government and Teamsters Union lawyers confer with U S District Court Judge Frank Wilson to set ground rules for James R Hoffa trial on jury tampering charges. Hoffa says he can have a fair trial. he traveled from Chicago, spent weekend with family in Detroit, returns Monday for proceedings moved from Nashville. Local union members greet him with signs thanking him for the contract.
Washington AP report quotes Rep. Otto Passman on foreign aid reform ideas. He notes proposals to fold the aid office into the State Department and to split military from economic aid. Passman, head of the House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign aid, helped trim the budget to 3 billion dollars, a cut beyond Kennedy's request.
