A major winter storm moves through the Cha nute area with heavy snow likely to accumulate five to six inches tonight. Winds increase and temperatures plunge into the teens, with clearing and much colder conditions expected Wednesday.
Letters go to Chanute Chamber of Commerce and Chanute Development Corporation members asking how much stock to subscribe for two building funds to attract large and medium employers. The plan outlines a $200000 fund for a 400–500 worker plant and a $20000 fund for a 250 worker plant, plus a third fund for industrial development by acquiring suitable acreage.
Kansas Highway Patrol cites icy road conditions in a fatality on a county road between Delia and Rossville northwest of Topeka. Robert McGrath, 20, of Delia died when his car skidded and went over an embankment late last night. He was alone in the vehicle.

Four inmates with lengthy records seized five guards at gunpoint at the Massachusetts State Prison in Boston demanding a car to flee. After seven hours state police moved in with machine guns while the four leaders, led by Theodore Green, resisted pleas from a Catholic chaplain. Ten hostages were freed from solitary confinement as prison officials refused any deal. The hostage guards named include Warren Harrington and others while Balbin and Green were among the ringleaders.
Senior High School faculty told the Board of Education the main challenge is meeting varied student abilities and interests. A panel discussed gifted students low achievers and diploma meaning with emphasis on opportunity for expression individualized instruction and extracurriculars for all.
Park Myers, treasurer of the Board of Education, said a 7:30 p.m. meeting at Union schoolhouse district No. 3 will discuss aspects of a proposed consolidation. The session is limited to district patrons.

A third collision occurred as Lewis Dillon backed a car into Gary Conklin on Main Street. both cars sustained damage.
City ordinance prohibits dogs from roaming freely within municipal limits. Penalty ranges from a $5 to $100 fine as enforced by the Chief of Police under advisory 234-61.

Dennis White a 21 year old inmate of the state prison pleaded innocent in City Court to a first degree murder charge. He allegedly fatally stabbed fellow inmate Boyd Scott a 24 year old from Fort Worth Texas on December 30 White waived preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial in District Court.
