Icy Roads Blamed For Traffic Death Near Delia

Kansas Highway Patrol cites icy road conditions in a fatality on a county road between Delia and Rossville northwest of Topeka. Robert McGrath, 20, of Delia died when his car skidded and went over an embankment late last night. He was alone in the vehicle.

Four convicts stage prison takeover at Massachusetts jail

Four inmates with lengthy records seized five guards at gunpoint at the Massachusetts State Prison in Boston demanding a car to flee. After seven hours state police moved in with machine guns while the four leaders, led by Theodore Green, resisted pleas from a Catholic chaplain. Ten hostages were freed from solitary confinement as prison officials refused any deal. The hostage guards named include Warren Harrington and others while Balbin and Green were among the ringleaders.

Slick pavement caused Clarence Denman of Chanute to slide a station wagon into a ditch and strike a power line pole north of Chanute. His passengers included a small child. no injuries were reported. Separately, Charles Greenwood's car struck a stopped vehicle at 9 S. Lincoln, Swink’s rear end damaged. City ordinance prohibits dogs from roaming freely within municipal limits. Penalty ranges from a $5 to $100 fine as enforced by the Chief of Police under advisory 234-61.

Inmate Pleads Innocent To First Degree Murder

Dennis White a 21 year old inmate of the state prison pleaded innocent in City Court to a first degree murder charge. He allegedly fatally stabbed fellow inmate Boyd Scott a 24 year old from Fort Worth Texas on December 30 White waived preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial in District Court.
