Humble Beginnings of Kansas 4th Division Highway HQ

This week recalls the 4th Division of the Kansas State Highway Commission starting in Chanute in 1927 with a single division engineer. The Memorial Building housed road business until growth required a West 14th Street complex with offices, shop, storage, and a lab. Mark Roberts is now division engineer guiding maintenance and construction across southeast Kansas.

Meditative caravan camps at Santa Fe Park overnight

A caravan of about 200 travelers in 24 converted buses from 10 states spent Friday night at Santa Fe Park for camping and meditation led by Steve Gaskin. Police reported a minor fire from a bus wiring short but no trouble others noted the group being peaceful and orderly. The group planned to travel to Tulsa then Boulder for talks while noting a decline in LSD use and finding other ways to get high.

Tippie the coin loving collie returns home

Tippie, an eight year old collie terrier from Ridge Store, had been missing several days. Found two miles north of the store while on his way home, he was recognized after statewide publicity. The Fitzgeralds reported him missing and thanked the community for help. He appeared tired and hungry upon returning.

Bids Open for Chanute 64-Unit Housing Project

Subcontract bids for the 64 unit middle in come housing project sponsored by the Chanute Jaycees are being received by John Polston of Modern Methods Kansas City. The project, financed by the Federal Housing Administration, totals about 960000 including land and fees. It will be built on West Main near Olsons Super Market and includes 4 one bedroom, 28 two bedroom, 28 three bedroom and 4 four bedroom units plus a community building.
