Chanute housing project setback over federal funds

Chanute's plan for a new housing facility failed to win federal funding amid low bids. Topeka official Fred Mann suggested Chanute could be an alternative if rent could be lowered to 271 dollars for one bedroom and 336 for two. Chanute Housing Authority plans a meeting to review adjustments.

Chanute National Guard unit restructured with new engineering battalion

Governor announces major reorganization affecting Kansas National Guard units from Feb 1. Chanute’s 3rd Battalion 137th Infantry becomes the 891st Engineering Battalion based in Manhattan. Other towns affected include Iola Yates Center Fredonia Cherryvale Neodesha Pittsburg and Wichita. The Chanute unit gains construction equipment for mechanization and plans a training session at Fort Leonard Wood.

Utilities building nuclear plant ordered to produce fuel costs

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board ordered the Wolf Creek plant operators to produce fuel cost contracts for inspection by the Kansas attorney general and a consumer group. William Ward of the MidAmerica Coalition for Energy Alternatives said opponents question the reasonableness of consumer costs.

Enrollment figures announced at NCCJC spring term

Neosho County Community Junior College reports 545 students enrolled for the spring semester with 5695 credit hours. 93 students have not completed enrollment. Last day to enroll is Jan 22 for day classes and Jan 29 for evenings. Evening classes in Yates Center added. 90 students enrolled this term were not in fall. Enrollment attrition typically 5 to 10 percent.
