The Republican controlled Kansas Legislature convened with Jess Taylor reelected as speaker after a voice vote. Democrats backed plans for proportional committee seats, signaling cooperation while reserving objection options.
Topeka AP report says Senate President pro tem Paul Wunsch and House Speaker Jess Taylor pledged cooperation with Gov. George Docking on legislative problems. Docking to address joint session with a general message and budget details by Jan. 26. He cites water as long term issue and will reappoint two expiring state posts.
Al Colvin a 35 year old tile contractor confessed to killing 10 year old Sammy Joe Moss and critically wounding his mother Alma Moss 40 in Monticello Indiana after a family quarrel Colvin who lived at the Moss home then shot himself but survived with flesh wounds Alma Moss was taken to a hospital in critical condition Rural Grange meeting minutes mention a pot luck and refreshments following the incident
Thieves broke into 14 Longton business houses between 2 and 6 am using a cutting torch to crack the Home State Bank vault. Items looted included cash, a safe inside the vault, and coins. 140 silver dollars reportedly missing. The FBI and Kansas Bureau of Investigation assisted in the case.
The drive to raise funds to purchase a site for the Neosho County home for the aged is close to the $10,000 goal. Additional contributions by noon yesterday added 14109 to the total, with last Friday seeing the committee dip into personal funds to buy the deed. Names of recent contributors include R. D. Churchill, Mitchell Motor Company, Chanute Discount Company, Blue Eagle Lodge No. 72, and several businesses and individuals.

Police investigated two minor collisions yesterday. At the Third Street underpass around 12 10 p.m. two cars driven by David Kennedy 17 of 524 West Main and John Lemonds 18 of 307 South Lafayette collided causing bumper and grille damage. About 1 p.m. at Fifth and Steuben Fred Dicks Jr 32 of 1126 South Lafayette and Mrs Mayme Hamilton 69 of Route 2 collided with damage to front bumper and grille and left rear fender.
Joseph Costello, 50, surrenders to start a federal prison sentence for a firearms conviction. He claims FBI links him to the Greenlease ransom mystery. Costello and accomplice Joe Cannella, a supervisor at Ace Cab Co. he owns, were taken to Terre Haute Federal Prison.
President Eisenhower outlined a 77 billion dollar budget for the next fiscal year aiming for a roughly 100 million dollar surplus. House GOP Leader Halleck and Senate Republican Dirksen said talks touched on tax relief in coming years and a balanced budget without harming national security.

In Detroit a 12 year old tried to rob a restaurant. the boy fired a shot into the floor during the hold up. Miss Janet Bundy, 20, grappled with him and he fled with two younger companions as police recovered a 38 caliber bullet.
D H Becker of near Salina was driving between Junction City and Manhattan when a group of deer appeared on the highway. One deer struck the car’s front end and was killed. another hit a door. Becker saw a third deer and could not confirm the total. He is the son of Mr and Mrs A Becker and works for a Wichita bank.
William Pranger 26 of Claremore Okla died from injuries after a car went off a road three miles south of Moline Elk County. Jewell Fields also of Claremore was hospitalized at Sedan in satisfactory condition.
TOPEKA AP reports state accident records show 12 traffic fatalities so far in 1959, up from 14 in the same period of 1958, with 1 death in the last 24 hours.
Frank Chionchio, the baby’s father, delayed signing a kidnapping complaint after joyfully identifying Lisa Rose Chionchio. Police and FBI later found the infant with Jean Iavarone, who claimed she was the mother. Medical tests proved the baby’s identity and the infant was returned to Frances Chionchio.
The Philadelphia Phillies fired general manager H. Roy Hamey and announced the hiring of Milwaukee executive John Quinn to lead the club's front office.

Italian director Roberto Rossellini asked Rome's civil court to speed up his custody case for Ingrid Bergman and his three children. He argued the children cannot live with Bergman and Swedish businessman Lars Schmidt, whom Bergman married last month in London. Even if Italy rules in his favor, a French court must confirm before custody could be granted, taking several months.
The AP reports unemployment rose above four million in December as weather curtailment of outdoor work and seasonal factors reduced jobs. Total employment fell by 680,000 from 64,653,000 to 63,973,000.
