Late Delivery From Dunkerque Reaches British Homes

AP reports mail from Dunkerque, 1940, arrived yesterday in Britain though 29 years late. A Munich- based ex-officer Josef Keller found the letters and sent them to Col. William Heal of the Suffolk Regimental Association. One note to a widow recalls a son’s wartime fate and a man now working as a railwayman.

Oil workers strike enters sixth day amid deadlock

The 60 000 member oil chemical and atomic workers union remains at odds with major oil firms over pay raises. The union seeks 72 cents hourly raises over 23 months. the companies offer half. Gasoline supply remains adequate nationwide, with shortages blamed on delivery workers crossing picket lines.

St Paul leaders report progress on urban renewal plan

A St Paul delegation told the city council in St Paul that their Fort Worth visit with HUD officials was satisfactory. They presented slides and data on a 575000 urban renewal project for the business district and nearby residential areas and expect a new application within 30 days.

Stabbing Victim Glenn Powers in Iola Car Incident

Police investigated a nighttime stabbing in a car north of Iola. Glenn Powers, 21, was stabbed during an apparent fight and underwent abdominal surgery at Neosho Memorial Hospital, remaining in fair condition. Two juveniles were taken into custody, one later released. the four in the car had been drinking in Iola and traveled to Chanute.

Apollo 8 Crew Honored in Washington Ceremonies

Frank Borman James Lovell Jr and William A Anders received the Distinguished Space Medal at the White House and addressed a joint Congress session. They became the first humans to orbit the Moon completing ten orbits during a six day spaceflight. A private Smithsonian Institution reception with top officials followed.

Educational Groups Agree On Aid Hike

Kansas education groups agreed on a plan to raise state aid for elementary and secondary schools by 65.8 million dollars. The funding would lift state aid from about 32 percent to at least 30 percent, with total aid rising from 84.2 million to 150 million. The plan was endorsed by the Kansas Association of School Boards the Kansas Association of School Administrators the Kansas State Teachers Association and the State Department of Public Instruction.
