Cambridge reports that President-elect Kennedy plans a second conference with outgoing President Eisenhower on the eve of his inauguration. The plan, part of a broader push for world peace aid to foreign scholars and a proposed two year overseas service corps, drew mixed reactions from Nixon.
Chanute resident Mrs. James B. Hutton received a Christmas thank you message from her son SP4 James A. Hutton stationed at Camp Kaiser Korea. A ham radio operator in Wisconsin picked up his military radio transmission and relayed it to Chanute where Jim Gilbreath read it to Mrs. Hutton. He has been in Korea since last June and is due to discharge next July after a two year tour.
Dale Painter announces the addition of James Benton to the First National Bank staff. Benton, 34, lives with wife Marion and children Sarah and Jimmy at 304 St Plummer. He previously ran fire and appliance businesses in DeRidder and supervised the Farmers Home Administration in Lake Charles for seven years. He is LSU 1950 graduate in agricultural economics, Oakdale high school 1943, a World War II navy veteran, and a Presbyterian.
Kansas City AP report says four Harrell children were saved from a second floor bedroom as flames and smoke trapped them. Henry 6 suffered critical burns over 35 percent of his body while Debbie Ann 7 Mark 5 and Ray 3 had lesser burns. The fire started from a cigarette in an adjoining room and the mother Mrs Robert Harrell was unable to reach the children. Firemen carried them down a ladder to safety.
Lester Marts of Chanute has been appointed undersheriff of Neosho County by Sheriff Jerry Sloan to fill the vacancy left by George Neely’s resignation. Marts, 45, married with four children, has lived in Chanute 15 years and previously ran a house moving business and worked for the Santa Fe railroad. His son R E Marts will continue the business. The family resides at 718 S Garfield.
Federal Judge W A Bootle stays the order requiring Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton E Holmes to enter the University of Georgia today. The stay delays the deadline while the state appeals and the legislature acts. Attorney Constance Baker Motley says the stay will be appealed to the 5th Court of Appeals as notices are posted for bond. The university is ordered to post a $5 000 bond to cover the Negro students expenses in further prosecution of the suit.
William Elvis Carter a 13 year old farm youth was found dead Sunday night near a burning oil well slush pond about six miles southeast of Russell. Sheriff Milton Galyart said the boy's clothing and body were burned and lay about 10 feet from the pond's west bank. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Cameron Carter residing near the farm home.
In Smith Center a 17 year old Harlan Kansas youth was killed when the car overturned in a wheat field. Dwight Anderson was leaning from the right front window and died instantly while coyote hunting with his father Clyde Anderson and friends.
Judge B M Dunham of Chanute retires after more than 11 years on the district court for Neosho and Wilson counties. George Donaldson, elected last November, sworn in as his successor at Erie. Donaldson previously served as county attorney of Neosho County and city attorney of Chanute. Dunham plans unspecified travel with wife.
Six Social Science teachers from the Senior High School will meet with Royster Junior High faculty on Wednesday afternoon to coordinate course content and strengthen programs between the two schools. Attending high school teachers include Jacquita Coe William Carl Ralph David Jerry Steele Harold Stroud and H A Wolgast.
The Tribune weekly tip contest winner is Glen Fegel of Chanute area. He reported a large beaver trapped on the Neosho River north of Chanute by Bill Gericke of Earlton. A photo of Fegel, his two year old son Danny, and the beaver ran in The Tribune. Contest continues through January with next week’s winner to be announced.
Erie Neosho County officials and deputies received their oaths of office at the courthouse at noon. Marion Showalter, county clerk, administered the initial oath to her successor, then led the rest of the ceremony with George Donaldson sworn in by Merle Estes. Others taking the oath included Burkman, Jeffrey, Young, Sloan, Vaughn, Diver, Ashley, Estes, and Showalter, with deputies Ferguson, Marts, Solomon, Edwards, and Gough also inducted. Freda Locke and Hazel Meeker were not sworn due to term dates.

John Anderson Jr., 43, of Olathe was sworn in as Kansas 36th governor in Topeka Municipal Auditorium. He pledged to faithfully execute office and lead a forward looking state, noting Kansas centennial and commitments to growth, resources, labor needs, and a government serving all people.
Rep. William L. Mitchell of Hutchinson 36 year old commander of the Disabled American Veterans will be speaker of the Kansas House for the 1961 session. Rep. Odd Williams and Rep. Fred Meek are jockeying for speaker pro tem as caucuses shape the leadership. Senate Republicans favor Paul R. Wunsch as majority leader and Harold H. Chase is the new lieutenant governor. Senate Democrats will pick a minority leader to succeed John R. Potuiek.
Two Chanute girls suffered minor injuries when struck by a car in front of Royster Junior High School around 9 25 p.m. Police identified De anna Patterson 13 and Jade Patterson 12 taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital and released. The driver Charles Lynn Erickson 17 said he did not see them in time.
President Eisenhower addresses 2500 delegates at Constitution Hall urging consideration of all opinions to set national goals for aging policy. He notes controversy over financing medical care for the aged and signals no personal stance, while Secretary Flemming calls for decisive action despite disputes involving AMA and insurance groups. Senator McNamara accuses AMA of blocking medical insurance for the aged.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision by Chief Justice Warren, held the United States need not pay 1,867,545 dollars in damages to the Dixon-Yates combine after the cancelation of the Dixon-Yates power plant contract. Justice Harlan wrote a dissent joined by Justices Whitaker and Stewart. The ruling overturned a Court of Claims award to the Dixon-Yates group for pre canceled project expenditures in 1955 under President Eisenhower.
The Weather Bureau reports Kansas will enjoy fair skies and mild warmth into the week. Sunday's highs ranged from 46 in Goodland and Garden City to 37 in Topeka and Concordia, with overnight lows in the 20s across the state.
Chanute takes delivery of a quint fire truck from American LaFrance with an aerial ladder and five operation features. The $44,750 unit arrived via Santa Fe freight from Elmira New York and will be unloaded for station delivery. Hutchinson engineer Paul Dunbar supervised the unload and initial check as a city commission meeting weighs the fate of two old trucks.
Lloyd Carter of St Paul route one was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transporting an open bottle. He posted 150 bond and a justice of the peace court set a January 25 hearing. Sheriff Jerry Sloan said Carter was taken into custody about 9 30 a m on a county road southeast of St Paul.
Police received a report from Wayne Moerer of 602 N Highland about a missing 1950 Ford. Officers found the car a block east and four blocks north of the Moerer home within minutes, with no details on its condition.
