In Mountain View California a man named James L Klopps slept on a new water bed as it filled and overflowed flooding the bedroom with several hundred gallons of water. Firefighters pumped out the room and advised rug cleaning.
In Vatican City Pope Paul VI calls for peace to replace vendetta and eye for an eye justice. He cites acts of clemency after the Leningrad and Burgos trials as hopeful signs, saying clemency is not weakness or injustice tolerance. He spoke from St. Peter's window to Romans and visitors despite rain.
Viet Cong radio claim tallies 420000 killed or wounded among allied forces in 1970, including over 100000 Americans, and asserts 5900 aircraft 7400 tanks 6700 other vehicles and 1850 artillery pieces. Allied counts place American deaths under 5000 and wounded under 20000, with casualties far lower than the VC figures.
An Egyptian jetliner with 26 aboard on a flight from Algiers to Cairo crashed on approach to Tripoli airport. All on board feared dead after the pilot misjudged distance to the runway. Libya News Agency reported 17 bodies recovered.

Traffic deaths declined to 89 from 101.
Mint Director Mary T. Brooks introduced the new Eisenhower dollar after Nixon signed the legislation. The coin features Eisenhower on one side and an Apollo 11 emblem on the other. Plans call for 20 million proof coins at $10 each, 150 million total coins with various compositions, and general circulation coins expected later this year.

Harold Asher a 20 year old Tulsa native and U S Navy sailor was killed in Vietnam by rifle fire during an ambush as he and four comrades ran supplies on a river This was his second trip to Vietnam and he had been there less than two months His widow survives in Tulsa and his mother is Thelma Swaney The funeral arrangements are pending awaiting the arrival of the body
Snow and ice blanket central France disrupts communications and delays relief for villages cut off by heavy snow earlier in the week. Snow plows operate in Montelimar as cold winds sweep the region.
Two car collision two miles south of Chanute Station injured drivers. Basil Diller 33 suffered minor injuries. Jess Kuhn 84 in satisfactory condition with bruises abrasions and one fracture. Patrol estimated $650 damage to Diller vehicle and $200 to Kuhn’s.
A counterfeit twenty dollar note appeared in Chanute when a Montgomery Ward employee at 23 West Main reported the bill to police at 2 30 PM Thursday. The bill, described as practically flawless aside from paper texture, is from a 1969 series with serial J58000651A and was turned over to the First National Bank. Montgomery Ward is checking with other local banks and merchants.
Senator John J. Williams of Delaware quietly resigns at year end to boost successor William V. Roth Jr. in seniority. Roth, then a Republican in the House, is slated to be sworn in at 11 a.m. Eastern as the 91st Congress holds its final session.
The AP reports temperatures plunging to 35 below zero in La Brevine and widespread freezing across Switzerland. Cities including Bern minus 13, Zurich and Basel minus 2, with Alpine resorts enduring extreme cold.
Six Missouri fatalities reported during New Year holiday with two days left and three Kansas deaths include Margaret Sutton Roy Ford and Jimmy Henson. Sutton died in Dodge City from a car collision. Ford perished in a two car crash north of Rolla. Henson died in Manhattan from earlier Friday crash.
