Readers recall Chanute glass factory souvenirs from 1910 11 and a Union Valley visit. Chanute adult education reports 307 participants, with programs under C V Crissman Ro bert Allen directs the effort. Overseas letters from Haysville families reveal marathon 44 page notes and a playful 18 foot toilet tissue letter.
City commission approves leasing the old water works east of town to the recreation commission for one year at 1 dollar. The site may host rifle and trap shooting archery weight lifting and indoor games with youth involvement. No funds or clear plan exist yet and Central facilities are undecided.
In June 1957 near Dinky Creek California Russell K Cone uses his bloodhound Daniel Boone to track a barefoot three year old boy Randy Libby missing since the previous afternoon. After a six hour search they locate him atop a steep rock slide and bring him safely to his relieved family.
Partly cloudy and mild with dry weather for the next two days in Kansas. Fog over eastern Kansas should lift by afternoon. highs expected in the 40s to 50s, lows in the 20s, with light rain and snow totals from yesterday.
The Community Council hosts its annual Fellowship Dinner at 5:30 in the Tioga Hotel. About 40 guests including past council presidents and leaders of member organizations are invited. Orville Robert Jr. of Independence, public relations at Sinclair Oil Co., will speak. Mrs. George Easton will become Council president after the meeting.
The Tribune highlights Chanute merchants spring opening with new fashions in clothing jewelry appliances shoes and furniture. Inside pages showcase advertisements and features with stories and pictures illustrating the latest clothing lines.
Altamont won with 3392 points as Altoona placed second and Chanute finished fifth in the Southeast Kansas Poultry and Egg Judging School held yesterday. Top individuals included Altoona’s Craner and Davis and Chanute’s Strack, with judge Tom Avery presiding and a Chanute team relay of participants led by sponsor Charles Carter.
Gov. John Anderson said he expects House passage with amendments for making Wichita University part of the state education system. The measure passed the Senate narrowly and could face changes in the House, including delaying changes until 1963 when state control would begin. Anderson favors some aid to Washburn but warns limits may apply. He urged budget increases for welfare services and noted renewed library support issues for the Wolfer Library for the Blind with extended deadlines and growing Kansas use.
Tragedy hit the Clifford Wichman family in Topeka when Betty Jo 9 ran from a school bus to greet her father and brother and collided with a car on U S 24. She was flung 97 feet and listed in serious condition at a local hospital as the family works to rebuild after a previous blaze.
Calvin Kissick aged 35 from Mount Hope died in a Reno County crash west of Andale. Everette Butterfield 44 and Max Shaffer 25, both Milan residents, were hospitalized. A stop sign at the county road intersection was reportedly removed, according to Sheriff’s Patrolman John Nail.
In Topeka the Kansas House discussed a resolution by Rep. William Stutz calling for a study on replacing ad valorem property taxes with a county wide adjusted gross earnings tax. The measure, if adopted, would task the Legislative Council to evaluate advisability and impact on roads and inequality.
President Kennedy proposes a pay as you go plan to finish 41 000 miles of express highways by 1972 without new gas tax. He urges avoiding the June 30 gas tax cut and calls for heavier truck taxes if Congress rejects the plan. Public road safety and billboard controls are also highlighted.
January 1961 consumer prices edged down a tenth of a percent led by clothing and food declines. The Bureau of Labor Statistics noted lower prices for eggs milk fruits and tomatoes with used car prices dropping amid weather. Wage adjustments for auto workers remained unchanged and fuel oil costs rose 3.6 percent under a winter price review.
Harold Wilson, 30, died in Joplin Missouri when a fork lift loader fell from a boxcar onto him as he unloaded the car. He worked for Central States Steel and apparently lost control causing the machine to back out of the door.
The Weather Bureau reports lighter rainfall across the Deep South but warns flood danger shifts southward. Jackson Mississippi evacuates up to 600. Selma Alabama braces for a 57.8-foot Alabama River crest with 1400 in Red Cross shelters. Federal aid is approved as disaster area. SBA loans available in 15 Alabama, 6 Mississippi, 2 Georgia counties. Construction sites on the Chattahoochee face risks as cofferdams and bridges are overwhelmed. Death toll rises to 13.
Howard Parsons announced today two more candidates filed for city and school board seats. Dr. Richard W. Good joined the school board race and William J. Althaber filed for the city commission unexpired term. Election set for April 4 with a possible March 21 primary if candidates exceed thresholds.
Washington AP reports a stamp honoring Kansas centennial birth day will go on first day sale in Council Grove Kansas on May 10. Rep. J Floyd Breeding says the Post Office Department announced the event.
Topeka AP traffic death log records 24 hours to 9 am showing 2 fatalities. February figures indicate higher deaths compared with the 1960s period. Comparisons note 57 deaths in the comparable 1960 period and February totals for 1961-66.
