Donna Rowan of 219 N Highland reported spotting a fled quail on Main Street yesterday during the blizzard conditions. The bird followed her as she passed Main and Highland before she retrieved it and turned it over to a Tribune employee to nurse at home.
Snow removal in downtown today brings back memories of August Lofgren the late street foreman who rode a horse with a home made scraper to clear walks. His son E E Lofgren recalls the practice began about 1922. Chet Blackwood researched a question from Mrs. Henry Clark about a Graf Zeppelin flight over Chanute in August 1929. Clark’s note and Blackwood’s archival answer shared the tale of the historic dirigible flight watched by neighbors and grandchildren alike.
Boston AP reports physicians caring for Cardinal Richard Cardinal Cushing, 69, archbishop of Boston, say his recovery from major abdominal surgery is satisfactory overall but slowed by an asthmatic condition. A chancery bulletin issued Tuesday notes a slight setback in his condition while expressing optimism.
After yesterday's near blizzard, the area reports two inches of snowfall and a 1 degree low with 74 percent humidity. Ice and icy conditions disrupt cables and power in Chanute, Erie, Humboldt, and surrounding towns as poles break and rural lines go out. Schools close, roads treated with sand, and a easing warm-up expected Thursday, with highs in the 25 to 30 range.
Lawrence Kansas AP reports Fraser Hall will be abandoned by summer after a 93 year old building was deemed unsafe. Balcony seating is closed and access restricted while inspectors monitor movement. Regents seek 2.5 million to fund a new humanities hall to replace it.
Ice accumulation on transmission lines and strong winds disrupted electric service across the city. Distribution chief George Eaton said lines swung three to four feet, causing outages in the southeast and for about 30 minutes to two hours on North Santa Fe. Operations at Mid-America refinery and Warwick wax plant were affected, with restoration by 8 p.m. Plant superintendent John Lofthouse called the day like a bad dream.
Siamese twin girls Karen and Kimberly Webber, separated surgically last week at Texas Children’s Hospital, ate milk and cereal on Tuesday. A spokesman reported both in satisfactory condition with an uneventful recovery expected. Kimberly out of the Isolette and Karen being taken out at intervals. Both breathing without difficulty.

Virgil Standish and Wayne Dobbs two Great Bend men survived 15 hours in a crashed Cessna 210 during a blizzard near the Scott County line. Blinding snow and wind kept them from leaving the wreckage until a farmhouse was spotted and they were led to Scott County Hospital. They suffered exposure and minor injuries.
Kansas Highway Department reports icy and snow packed roads across the state after Tuesday's snowstorm. One road closed. warnings to use caution where snow or ice persists. Northeast and north central districts show snow in the south half and snow packed in the north. Northwest reports packed sections with K16 closed west of Olsburg. Southeast half icy, south half very icy. South central similar to southeast. Southwest roads generally clear.
The United States used jet aircraft for the first time against the Viet Cong in South Viet Nam with B57 bombers and F100 fighters joining air operations. American crews manned both flight controls and weapons as strikes continued over six days. Much fighting occurs in steep valleys where roads key government communications.
A Kansas House panel approved a five district redraw raising populations from 420,924 to 444,916 by a 72 to 48 vote. The proposal, backed by top Republican leaders, keeps Wyandotte County split between the 2nd and 3rd districts and splits Sedgwick County between the 4th and 5th. Critics warned federal courts may strike it down, urging equalized districts to protect one person one vote. The plan advances to a final House vote set for Thursday.
Paris reports France will cooperate with the Soviet Union to press for an international conference to resolve Vietnam. Moscow proposed neutralizing South Vietnam, with France also backing discussions covering North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Prime Minister De Gaulle met with Soviet ambassador Vinogradov as Peyrefitte announced the policy shift.
Kansas traffic death log shows 39 fatalities in the 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday for February 1965, compared with 95 in the comparable 1964 period.

A six member board will govern. three holdovers from Chanute join, with three new seats up for election April 6. Filing ends March 9. Oswego Kansas voters approved three bond issues totaling 39000 and rejected a fourth in a special election. Funds will cover 25000 for park repairs 9000 for city library repairs and 5000 to furnish and equip an addition to the city hospital. A proposal to cap airport improvements at 21500 if a federal grant of 25000 or more is obtained was defeated.
A late-model car purchased by the Lloyd Rensing family in Rural Route 3 was reported destroyed by fire about 8 o'clock last night. Ronnie Redburn, a neighbor, reported the incident. Attempts to reach the Rensings were unsuccessful. The son Larry reportedly opened the door, saw smoke, and the interior suddenly ignited.
Traffic mishaps on icy streets impeded visibility and footing yesterday as multiple accidents occurred. No injuries were reported though several vehicles suffered damage ranging from minor bumper scrapes to more substantial hits. Key incidents included a city truck collision under the 3rd street underpass, a crash on Island Highland involving a 1950 Ford and a parked Buick, and other bumper impacts at Main and Washington, 219 S. Highland, 3rd and Santa Fe, plus a parked car damaged on North Grant.
