Council members discussed Kansas law blocking a stand alone recreation program vote. State AG opinion says the proposal may only be submitted at an election called for another purpose. Petitions will be distributed at the March meeting with 5 percent of last election voters required.
Harrisburg AP report says a domestic quarrel froze two months and ended with a shooting in Marysville home. Charles Baker 43 died from a head wound, son Charles E. Baker 18 also wounded, and baby Jeffrey 1 sustained a shoulder wound. The family host was a local orchestra leader who played at social clubs and ran the Enola Hotel.
Police reported a morning collision on Slick Street when David E. Park er, 311 N Forest, turned from Elm to Evergreen and skidded on a slick surface. His 1956 Buick sustained left front damage while Mrs. Carl Ranabargar, 1019 N Forest, drove a 1964 Ford station wagon with reported damage. A second minor incident occurred about 12 30 a m at 6th and Santa Fe when J Howard Burt Wichita claimed his 1962 Hudson hit a street marker.
A federal grand jury in St. Louis charges Warehouse and Distribution Workers Local 688 and Taxicab Drivers Local 405 and six officers with illegal political contributions. Named defendants include Harold J. Gibbons and six other Teamsters officers.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Willis secured zoning board consent to add a structure to their residence at 3168 Tennessee. The action authorizes construction plans for the proposed expansion.
DETROIT AP A 38 year old widow Nelle Lassiter was charged with first degree murder and conspiracy in the bludgeon shoot murder of her husband Parvin Lassiter. Gordon Watson one of the suspects was arrested in Los Angeles and will waive extradition. The state says Hicks Jones Nash aligned with Lassiter and Watson arranged the killing for money.
A group of acting inmates at Massachusetts State Prison Walpole sent an order to a Broadway costume company for three convinct uniforms. The company responded it could provide authentic garb needed for a performance of My Three Angels.
Chanute businessmen plan to attend the Aircade for Congressional Action at the Broadview Hotel in Wichita. Chanute chamber manager Joe Melnyk will lead a party including Robert Allen, Marlin Blackston, Floyd Naff, Bill Young, and Dale Painter.
Bill Kelso is appointed as the new flight service specialist at the FAA communications center. Burl OConnor, chief of operations, announced the change, with Kelso succeeding Truman Stearn who moved to Springfield Illinois. Kelso previously worked at the air route travel patrol center in Kansas City, and he and his wife and two children reside at 328 West Fourth Street.
Kansas City report says cab driver James H. Weeks picked up an extra fare when Mrs. Lee Gilliland, 27, an expectant mother, gave birth to a baby daughter in the back seat on the way to the hospital. Both mother and infant were reported doing fine.
In Washington the Dixie forces in the Senate announced a plan to use filibuster tactics against new civil rights legislation. Senator Richard Russell voiced the move, setting Thursday to begin, as a response to alleged threats of 24 hour sessions to push votes. Lyndon Johnson hoped for voting on civil rights issues next week amidst talk of round-the-clock sessions.
Franklin Williamson Jr. and Myers were sentenced to 30 days for petty larceny arising from the theft of a tire and wheel from a car owned by Lee Judy of 1643 S Central. They were arrested at 8:50 a.m. after a 2:30 a.m. incident linked to Williamson driving a car involved in a collision at 2nd and Highland and a separate driver license charge.
Attorney Jim Foster announced acceptance of a position as ad juster for Farmers Insurance in Phoenix Arizona. He and his wife Jerry Ann, both law school graduates, opened a law office at 114 W Main last July. Foster left for Arizona today and his wife and daughter will join him there. Mrs Foster is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Tribble of 217 W 2nd.
Earl Steward aged 41 from Baltimore was executed in Nevada for the murder of Thomas Jessen an 86 year old Jamaica Tong driver.
President Eisenhower arrived in Rio amid confetti and massive crowds, promising peaceful development and urging allied nations to defend freedom of choice. He reiterated a hands off warning against any ideology threatening American sister republics and noted Brazil’s cordial reception with President Kubitschek.
Cold weather persists across Kansas with highs near 21 degrees in Chanute and lows around 10 to 12 below zero in northwest areas. Highway conditions worsen north of Chanute while city crews sand and salt main roads. Forecasters warn of more storms and little meltage, with widespread snow depths of three to 15 inches and moisture from new systems adding 5 to 10 inches.
State Rep. Jim Mangan announced as candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. The Ford County lawyer, 47, won county attorney posts in 1948 and 1950. Addison I. West filed as Republican for district judge of Harvey and McPherson. Dist. Judge George L. Allison will not seek reelection. State Treasurer George Hart announced a run for Democratic renomination and hinted at possible pursuit of the 4th District seat.
State Gen Charles B Joseph of Potwin a Democrat seeks renomination for a first term as state general. Topeka shows Clay Hedrick Harvey County clerk filing for Republican state auditor. Hedrick Newton former Kansas County Clerks Assn president seeks post of George Robb Salina who will not seek reelection.
AP reports Topeka traffic death tally for 24 hours ending 9 am Wednesday. Compared with 1959 period, deaths total 69 for 1960-48 comparable span.
AP reports most Kansas highways were open but slick and hazardous. Major routes open include K-106 K-14 Lincoln to Ellsworth K-9 Beloit to Clifton K-148 Norway to Linn and K-4 east of U S 81 with one way traffic. Northwest and other regions note slick when open.
