St Paul resident Jess Sharp bought and sold over 20 tons of pecans this season. Most sales went to a St. Louis dealer, with the last load this week going to Butler Missouri. Sharp sourced the crop from Neosho and Labette counties.
About 275 area farmers and friends joined the Chanute Farmers Cooperative Assn for the second annual Neighbor Night at Fairfield school east of Chanute. The event featured a dinner, bowling talk by Aubrey Bostwick, and a plan to reserve lanes in St. Louis for warm ups. Four Chanute teams totaling 22 bowlers are entered in the American Bowling Congress Nationals Feb 14 to Apr 26. A Quick Draw club in Chanute was proposed with officers to be elected.
General George C. Marshall, age 78, remains seriously ill at Fort Bragg as age and strokes take a toll. Army physician Col. George M. Powell reports his condition as "essentially unchanged" with pneumonia accompanying a second stroke on Tuesday night after the first stroke on January 15.
Topeka AP report says Senate Judiciary Committee recommends passage of a bill banning possession sale or manufacture of switchblade knives in Kansas. The measure aligns with federal statutes and accompanies other bills from the Interstate Cooperation Commission. Another proposal would let prisoners seek immediate disposition of pending charges. if none is made, charges could be dropped.
Dave Beck Sr., 64, former Teamsters leader, was found guilty on four counts of income tax evasion totaling 240 067 for 1950 53 and two counts of filing false returns. He faced up to five years per count and a 10 000 fine per count with sentencing set for Feb 27.
Neosho and Wilson county bar associations opposed a House plan to create a five county Southeast Kansas judicial district. The proposal would add Labette Crawford and Cherokee to Neosho and Wilson, increasing judges from one to three. A protest resolution was approved by the Neosho Wilson District Bar Association, with Chanute and Fredonia chambers of commerce filing objections. Delegates from Chanute and Fredonia testified before the House Judiciary Committee.

Henry Ford II charged that big labor slows American economic progress and obstructs a new productive explosion. He warned labor could be curbed by legislation akin to the Sherman Act and labeled AFL-CIO the most aggressive force in American politics during a Yale University lecture.
Mrs. F. W. Brinkerhoff wife of the Pittsburg Headlight and Sun editor was moved to the University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment after a stroke on January 8 in Pittsburg. Her condition had shown slow improvement prior to transfer.
Kansas traffic fatalities listed by the State accident records section show figures for the last 24 hours and year to date. The report references Topeka and lanes period 1953-60 with 1961 data.
A suit to oust Arkansas City commissioners and the city manager was filed in Cowley County District Court by the state and county. It alleges 1958 expenditures violated state budget and cash basis laws, including golf course spending and a 12 000 dollar fire equipment contract. Gov. Docking asked Kansas Bar for guidance on ethics of a legislator serving on a case involving a law he helped pass.
In Leesburg Florida two rescued children Edward Norton 11 and Donald Norton 5 reentered their burning one room frame home and perished in the blaze. Their mother was seriously burned helping three other children escape before the roof collapsed. The fire also destroyed the Norton family dwelling.
E K Beeman of Topeka is elected president of the Kansas Motor Car Dealers Assn. Howard Good of Junction City is vice president and Bert Collard Jr of Leavenworth is treasurer. The announcement appeared in Wichita with note about Tribune delivery.
In Topeka the Legislative Apportionment Committee nears completion on a bill to reapportion seven House seats. Sedgwick and Johnson counties would gain two each, Wyandotte Barton and Saline one each, with seven smaller counties losing two. Wyandotte district boundaries remain the main remaining issue.
Sen. John J. Williams introduces a bill to prohibit free or cut-rate ocean cruises for anyone on the federal payroll including Congress members. He notes railroads and airlines already bar such rates for public officials.
Sunray Mid-Continent Oil Co cut its posted price for Oklahoma sweet crude by three cents to 3.05 a barrel effective today. Sunray buys about 115000 barrels daily and is the largest single purchaser of Oklahoma oil. Indiana Oil Purchasing Co also reduced its price earlier in the week from 3.08 to 3.05.
Slightly warmer temperatures are forecast for Kansas today and tonight with highs in the 30s and lows around 15 to 25. Snow was reported in Concordia and Hill City with traces elsewhere. a five day outlook predicts light precipitation, mainly snow, with a general east west temperature swing of up to 5 degrees above or below normal.
Banks and the Chanute Building and Loan will close Monday for George Washington's birthday observance. The post office will be closed but provide usual Sunday service. Most other businesses and all city county and state offices stay open. The Tribune will be published.
Robert N. Allen of 201 S. Larson was admitted to Neosho Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon for examination and treatment of a sprained back. He injured his back while loading luggage for a trip and was advised by his physician to seek hospital care when symptoms did not improve. He expects to be released about Sunday or Monday.
