In Collier Township a 600-foot bridge slated for Interstate 79 is 13 feet off line with ramps and roadways. Construction stops as engineers redesign the ramps. The error, blamed on a mathematical mismatch by private consultants, prompted officials to call it the worst mess they've faced.
Rep. Paul Rogers introduces a bill in the House to guarantee 2.4 billion dollars in loans and 900 million in grants over three years. Co sponsor Rep. Joe Skubitz notes expansion beyond grants to include loan programs for nonprofit hospitals health centers long term care facilities and rehabilitation centers and diagnostic treatment centers.
Duane Earl Pope asks Chapell Nebraska court to dismiss murder charges contending the state death penalty provision is unconstitutional. Pope, a Roxbury native and McPherson College graduate, was linked to a 1964 Big Springs Bank robbery that killed three and maimed one. He had a federal death sentence set aside by the Supreme Court and now faces state murder charges potentially carrying another death penalty.
Israel's leaders met as newspapers vowed retaliation for an Arab guerrilla attack on a Boeing 720 at Zurich Kloten airport. Six of 27 aboard wounded, two seriously. Police say an Israeli security agent killed one attacker during the gunfight, with three other Arabs arrested.

Civil Air Patrol couldn't join due to drizzle and low clouds but plans to fly as soon as weather clears.

He notes communications breakdowns, confirms five WIN applicants enrolled of ten held, and stresses pursuit of facts without public dispute.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved by voice vote a resolution calling for a statewide vote on liquor by the drink in Kansas. The action was reported by AP.
Robert Coble of Thayer pled guilty in city court to petty larceny for stealing copper wire from the Frank White farm near Thayer. He was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. Coble and two Thayer men Ronald Raida and Carl Linker faced grand larceny charges later reduced. The trio were arrested February 11 by Neosho County Sheriff George Neely for a theft dated January 27. Preliminary hearings for Raida and Linker were set for today.
City planning commission will hold its regular meeting tonight at 7 in the Memorial Building commission room. On the agenda is the application of Jerry Phillips for permission to establish and operate a mobile home park.
California files a 1.3 billion dollar claim and suit against four oil firms and the federal government for negligence tied to a giant offshore oil spill. Charles A. O'Brien says 500 million targets Interior, 800 million targets Union Oil Texaco Mobil Gulf. Santa Barbara County City of Santa Barbara and Carpinteria join the action for damage to fish wildlife and beaches.
A noon collision on US 59 north of Erie caused extensive damage to a 1968 Ford pickup driven by Everett Faulkner, 60, of Chanute R. 4, who swerved to avoid a Santa Fe train and struck a signal post. No injuries reported. post damaged, track and train damaged. train engineer R. E. Williamson, 52, of Central Beach noted.
Vincent W. DeCoursey, executive director of the Kansas Catholic Conference, urged the Kansas House Education Committee to introduce legislation expanding state transport and textbook support to include both public and nonpublic students. He argued that current tax limits strain both systems and noted potential $25 million annual savings from nonpublic student enrollment.
