Atlas previously broadcast Eisenhower’s Christmas message. Johnson notes later defense spacecraft will track enemy space vehicles.
In Topeka the Kansas House debates gender presence with a tongue in cheek tone as female membership rises from one to three. A voice vote supported hiring a female assistant to the sergeant at arms to ensure access and that female voices are fully heard on all matters.
Atty. Gen. John Anderson filed in Rice County District Court to oust Lyons police chief L. H. Ankerholz. Charges allege reduction or non filing of drunken driving charges for money up to 1000 dollars, with chief allegedly sharing proceeds. A hearing on suspension is set for February 24. Ankerholz denies guilt.
A small grass fire on the Santa Fe railroad right of way one mile west of Vilas was put out by the highway patrol about 1 40 a m today with no damage. Troopers sent a cruiser to investigate after a telephone report of an unattended blaze.
Aviation Machinist Billy L. Cheatwood survived a lightning strike that hit a P2V Navy patrol bomber at 7,000 feet, 100 miles northwest of San Francisco during anti-submarine training. He suffered minor burns and shock though the bolt split rivets and damaged the stabilizer.
AP reports chilly winter weather across Kansas with partly cloudy east and light snow in the west. Overnight lows ranged from 13 at Lovewell Dam to 27 at Pittsburg, while Dodge City, Hill City and Garden City saw up to an inch of snow and highs reached 53 in Pittsburg.
Bruce Roberts and Robert E. Crawford of Wilson & Co. met with Salina officials to review preliminary plans for a new municipal water treatment plant. Final plans are set for city commission approval March 9 with construction contract letting March 27 at 2 p.m.
Kansas City AP reports Nebraska Governor Ralph G. Brooks became the eighth governor to endorse a Wyandotte County Kansas site for the proposed Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Kansas University Chancellor Franklin Murphy told the Senate Ways and Means Committee that state colleges face a critical period to meet space and educational needs. He urged merit pay hikes, a funded faculty retirement plan, and expanded buildings, while Gov. Docking opposes raises and a separate retirement plan. Murphy notes KU salaries lag national averages and calls for $5 million more in building funds over four years.
An 11 year old boy named James Bell survived a 17 story fall from an apartment window. He landed in a low bush on a soggy lawn Tuesday and suffered two broken wrists two broken elbows a black eye and internal injuries.
President Eisenhower stated he expects Secretary Dulles to remain in office as long as he can. He noted no plans to replace Dulles and that discussions with advisors will continue while Dulles undergoes radiation therapy for cancer found after hernia surgery. Four outside medical experts have been consulted at Walter Reed Hospital.

A Kansas House bill would make revocation mandatory for negligent homicide in vehicle operation and for DUI cases. It would also revoke after certain felonies and repeated speeding, with permanent loss unless restored after a year. Fees would rise by one dollar. revenue partly funds the Highway Patrol exams.
In Chicago on January 16, Chief Justice Abraham L. Marovitz rebuked 16 year old Joseph Basile for probation violation after a guilty plea. Basile was later shot and killed during a holdup attempt on February 10.
A Red Cross Neosho County fund campaign meeting is set for 7 30 tonight in the Federation room of the Memorial building. County chair William G Bodley said plans will be made for the advance gifts drive starting Friday and the residential drive beginning March 2 across the county. Independence volunteer area fund chairman Jack Newkirk will speak, with Coffeyville field rep Pat Schiuck attending. Films will be shown. A similar Erie gathering occurred this afternoon.
In Louisville a 16 year old boy, Donald Holehan, fired seven shots from a sawed off rifle and hid in a shed for three hours before police used tear gas to force him out. He surrendered after 20 officers surrounded the scene. No injuries were reported. He faced delinquency and malicious shooting charges. His mother said he hid after she refused him money for a car.
More than 200 members of the League of Women Voters watched lawmakers in session at the Kansas State House in Topeka, observing the action in progress.
Maj. Jesus Sosa Blanco, 51, was executed at La Cabana Fortress after being convicted a second time as a war criminal. In a calm final moment he ordered the firing squad, saying I forgive you and then Get ready Aim Fire.
A new star mail route inaugurated Tuesday links Chanute to Fort Scott and Topeka, improving daily delivery. The Fort Scott to Chanute truck runs 5 20 a.m. to 7 50 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 10 p.m. via Hiattville Redfield Uniontown Bronson Moran Elsmore Lavenburg Stark, with overnight delivery and connections to Topeka and west.
The petition of Wendell Bowyer as a candidate for membership on the Board of Education was filed yesterday at the city clerk's office. Two other school board nominating petitions have been filed but not official today for incumbents Ebur Schultz and Dr. E C Cathers. City Clerk Howard Parsons said their petitions have the required signatures but the certification statements are not signed by the candidates. No petitions have been received for the two city commission posts.
New York reports plans for a 55 story commercial office building named Grand Central City. Builder Erwin S. Wolfson estimates construction will cost about 100 million dollars and start later this year near Grand Central Terminal.
