Early Gas Discovery At Chanute Marks Local Drilling Effort
In 1899 Chanute city records show the first gas well in local fields drilled at the water plant after voters approved 5000 in bonds. After reaching cap rock depth, workers drilled a few feet deeper and found natural gas. I E Knapp soon reported oil on a lease east of Chanute. Elks Lodge members and volunteers prepared a Cerebral Palsy Telethon tied to KOAM-TV, with station from Memorial Hall Joplin Mo. Telethon operations organized by Ray L Smith and Elks officials included multiple telephone shifts and local pledges, aided by extra phones and volunteers from Chanute and surrounding families.
