Plantation Kansas City AP Gus Lind is growing bananas in Kansas. The first stalk of small green bananas will be large enough to harvest soon. He estimates a price of about 4 dollars per pound or 1 dollar and 25 cents per banana. He says he grows them to prove it can be done in Kansas.
Pickney Love says he is being removed as principal of Waynesboro Elementary after taking down pictures of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis from the auditorium wall. He cites political pressure and says the board refused to renew his contract. School officials declined to comment.
Kansas Republicans say the Agriculture Department announces 1971 crop set-asides of 20 percent for feed grains and 75 percent for wheat. Preliminary payments for corn and sorghum are set by yields and base. wheat payments depend on parity and early market prices. Wheat loan level is $1.25 per bushel. 75 percent of certificate value paid after July 1 with remainder after December 1, 1971.
Thousands of striking postal workers led by union chief Tom Jackson marched to Hyde Park in a four week dispute with the Post Office. The union seeks 16 percent while the Post Office offers 8 percent, costing the Post Office over 26.4 million in lost revenue. Mail delivery is halted. some offices reopen as telephone operators resume duty.
South Vietnamese Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky told the New York Times in Saigon that the Vietnam push into Laos would last until May and could recur during next year’s dry season. He said bombing North Vietnam could be necessary, targeting bases in Laos and rear bases in the North.
Dr. Charles Hurst, president of Malcom X College Chicago, told a Pittsburg State College audience that America's core issue remains race relations. He described racism and educational gaps as wasting minority brain power during Black Heritage Week at the college.
Kenneth L. Brown of Southwestern Bell says unlisted numbers cost more for operators. Starting with a new directory, customers can pay $1 a month to keep their numbers private in Kansas City Kansas and parts of Johnson County where nonpublished numbers rose 67 percent in three years from 20 900 to over 35 000.
An AG opinion in Kansas questions Hutchinson curfew laws until the state juvenile code redefines a miscreant act. Issued last month under Kent Frizzell, the ruling was only recently learned by local officials.
Kansas House Judiciary Committee approved a proposal to repeal the constitutional ban on lotteries, aiming for a full House vote and potential Senate referral. If approved, the measure could appear on a special election ballot April 6 with support from Republicans and Democrats, who seek accompanying anti gambling legislation except Bingo. Speaker Stowig and Chairman Euler commented on timing and odds of passage. In other notes, two candidates filed for Neosho County School District 101 board seats for the April 6 election.
The city commission approved a $35,000 warrant for water plant repairs and adopted the 1968 National Electrical Code. Funding stems from a July report by City Manager Manning and City Engineer Heath noting deficiencies and capacity limits. Planned work includes rebuilding filter beds by March or April at about $19,000, replacing clarifier walls for $2,700, and enlarging the slurry lagoon for $8,100, with a 15 percent contingency to total $34,865.
The planning commission approved most gas and electric projects for city improvements to be submitted to the city commission. Costs range from $3,855 to $147,680 for replacements and extensions with October completion targets, while several proposals were tabled for more detail. Electrical upgrades include new transformers and interconnects. water plant protection and future plant reliability were also addressed.
A Tri-State Motor Transit Co. truck cab was blown apart and the empty trailer burned in a late night explosion and fire in Webb City Missouri. A woman visiting a nearby home sustained minor cuts from flying glass as windows shattered across the surrounding residential area. The truck was parked in front of driver Frank West aged 33.
An explosion near a Tri-State truck loaded with dynamite drew police with reports of sniper fire and multiple blasts. Arrests are pending as two men and a woman face trial in May. Federal agents and the Treasury Department are investigating, with sniping cases noted in Wyoming Kentucky and Texarkana. Temperatures and area forecast follow.
Two more candidates filed for the Neosho County Junior College board seats as three positions are up in the April 6 election. Filing are Dr Richard Good Chanute dentist and Gerald Pryor Chanute radio station KKOY staff member. Incumbent Dr James A Rowland Erie dentist also filed.
