William Briggs recalls a Chanute Times item from August 27, 1897 about a horse at the Rustamier farm whose bridle was looped under its jaw to force a lead. When the horse pulled, the rein and bit cut off part of its tongue. the animal reportedly ate normally afterward.
The weather bureau predicts a mild, dry period in Kansas through Tuesday with little temperature change. Saturday's rainfall totaled 0.04 inch while highs ranged from 61 at Chanute and Pittsburg to 44 at Goodland and overnight lows from 18 at Hill City to 37 at Pittsburg.
Neosho County Teachers Association met last week to elect new officers. Wayne Atherton of Galesburg was named president, Dan Morgan of Thayer vice president, Sunshine Erickson of Cremona secretary, Nelle Stevens treasurer, Elvina Carlson Seanna delegate to the Kansas Teachers Association Convention, and Howard Woodward Stark alternate delegate. Mrs. Grace Standley presided and committees filed annual reports as refreshments were served.
Police report two separate morning crashes at Washington and Elm damaged a 1956 Ford and a 1953 Buick. Robert E. Williams and Howard Lee Barr were the drivers. A second collision at First and Lincoln involved a 1950 Olds, Wayne L. Studebaker, and a 1953 Willys driven by Pete W. Coffey with no damage to Coffey.
Gus Dee Overby of Osawatomie and Eugene Oliver Hobert of Fredonia were arrested on intoxication charges. Both pleaded guilty in police court and received jail terms with Overby getting 30 days and Hobert 15 days. the truck involved was owned by a Fredonia termite control operator and reported stolen.
Ray A. Galloup, 46, Independence Kansas, was killed yesterday when his car left U S 166 and crashed into a ditch 23 miles east of Arkansas City.
Four senior girls were nominated by the Blue Comet basketball team for the royal position. Candidates include Sheila Bray and Su. The queen will be crowned at halftime of the Comets versus Parsons High game next Friday. The Pep Club led by Marion Stevens will organize the ceremonies and the girls drum corps under Helen Anderson will march and crown the queen. A coronation dance follows the game in the Junior College Little Theater.
Lt. Lawrence W. Hansen of the U S Navy piloted a Neptune patrol bomber that developed engine failures near Winslow Arizona during a routine training flight. With both engines failing the crew and four passengers bailed out at about 8600 feet. One crewman became tangled in a harness delaying his exit and three men crowded the nose hatch before Geer freed him and all jumped. Luecke and Phelps were injured, the crew reached the ground and were taken to San Diego Naval Hospital.
The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee proposes abolishing the State Board of Penal Institutions and creating a five member parole and probation board to oversee releases. A director of prisons would manage prison administration, with the governor limited to paroles only on recommendations from the new board.
Dr. P. H. Stephens research director for the Farm Credit Administration in Wichita will address the Chanute Production Credit Association annual meeting. The event at the Masonic Temple dining hall includes a 11 a.m. business session a noon luncheon and an afternoon program with the speaker around 1 30 p.m. The association will be recognized in the afternoon for becoming completely member owned on Jan 1.
Chanute banks and the Chanute Building and Loan Association will be closed tomorrow for Lincoln's birthday. The county welfare office and district court clerk's office, along with all county offices at Erie, will also close. Retail stores and the Chanute post office will operate normally with the Tribune publishing as usual.
Kansas Governor George Docking announced that Lynn Brodrick will resign as Democratic national committeeman after a Civil Service ruling barred holding the highway director post and party role simultaneously under the Hatch Act. The decision affects federal funds overseen by the highway department and other state agencies. Docking said a central committee appointment will follow, while stressing politics should be kept out of state agencies and urging officials to focus on duties.
Mrs. B. H. Galvin of Fort Scott visited the University of Kansas Medical Center twice on Saturday, including an unscheduled visit. After a stop for a meal in Overland Park she fell, dislocating her right shoulder, and was transported back to the center by ambulance. She returned home for treatment at a Fort Scott clinic.
Nine trophy heads from Jonas Bros. Studios in New York are en route to Chanute for the proposed Osa and Martin Johnson memorial museum. The group includes a buffalo, kongoni, Grant gazelle, Grevy zebra, Grant zebra, Coke hartebeeste, top reedbuck and Thompson gazelle. Display planned at the former Calvert location after arrival. Matthews reports invoices and letters from 20th Century Fox and Rowland Ward Limited regarding film distribution and Africa catalogs.
Clifford Brooks 31 of rural Colony was injured when his dump truck was struck by Santa Fe train No 212 at the US 169 crossing in Earlton. The train hit the rear of the truck causing coke debris to damage two parked cars. Brooks’ condition was not confirmed. Train continued to Kansas City about an hour late.
El Dorado editor Clymer receives the fourth William Allen White award for journalistic merit at a KU Foundation luncheon. Brinkerhoff praised his news presentation and editorial page work. the event honored White’s birthday with lectures and speeches. police report a broken Santa Fe Park vending machine with money missing.
Paris greets 72 year old Anna Beck arriving from the United States to marry her childhood sweetheart Camille Lambert 73, a former businessman from Herbeuval. After missed connections at the airport she predicts a happy life in America and recalls dancing together 52 years ago.
Topeka reports Kansas traffic fatalities listed by the State Accident Records Section for the last 48 hours and year to date. In the period 1957 there are 1 fatality, 47 for the same period in 1956 is 59.
Mahlon Morley announces a farm water problems discussion at Memorial Building Chanute on Wednesday led by Frank Blecha Ruth Wells and Roger Regnier. The meeting opens at 10 a.m. in the Federation room with attendance encouraged from extension council representatives 4-H leaders and home economics units.
John David Holland, 16, of Kansas City, injured in a two car crash east of Earlton, showed improvement but remains in danger according to his physician at Neosho Memorial Hospital. He likely has a skull fracture and x rays could not be completed due to his condition. Holland rode as a back seat passenger in a car driven by W H Flood of Kansas City. Flood and Mr and Mrs Raymond T McKinsey of Thayer were also injured, though not seriously.
Yesterday the city used 1,066,000 gallons, down from 1,164,000 yesterday a week ago. Year ago yesterday usage was 1,349,000 gallons. Last seven days total 8,325,000 gallons, down from the prior seven days 8,477,000.
