Neosho Birth and Teen Scout Week Highlights

A son, Jerry Dean Matlock, was born at 6:13 p.m. yesterday at Neosho Memorial Hospital, the first boy for Lige Matlock and wife. Chase teens faced a bobsled crash injuring eight, with Carol Kuster the only one unhurt. Chanute Boy Scouts served as city officials for a day, presiding over a city commissioners meeting and assisting in routine duties.

Little Girl’s Coughing Saves Family From Fire

In Fairway Kansas a 3 year old girl’s coughing alerted her family to a fire in their home. A. F. Trotter woke by his daughter Anne Elizabeth and carried her and the rest of the family out as smoke filled the upstairs. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

Drownings Reported In Independence Ice Fishing Incident

Four year old Frederick Stewart drowned while ice fishing in Verdigris River near Independence. A companion, Mark Alan McKown, escaped after falling through ice. both boys went without parental permission. Frederick survived by his parents Charles and (Mrs.) Stewart. the family has four other children.

Boeing Airplane Co announced a 21 million dollar development center in Seattle for missile research and parts of its guided missile program. The facility aims to advance propulsion guidance and aerodynamics with partnerships and new jobs in the region.

Lawrence AP reports Pittsburg editor F. W. Brinkerhoff of the Headlight and Sun received the William Allen White Foundation award at a KU program marking White’s birthday. The 45 year journalist was praised for steadfastly defending community news and public issues.

Mad Dog Irvin Back in Custody

Leslie Irvin, the so called Mad Dog, was captured in a Market Street pawnshop after fleeing Gibson County Jail in Indiana. He is tied to six slayings and a robbery spree linked to California and Kentucky victims. Experts Plan Twister Tracking in Fine Art

Oklahoma City AP reports scientists at a regional IRE conference envision refined tornado tracking using sferics, electrical impulses detected by radio equipment to gauge storm intensity. They note 15 impulses per second signals severe storms and over 20 suggests tornado formation, with last year’s Blackwell twister showing 26 to 39. Challenges include coordinating radar and sferics data and identifying storm types, while Air Force and Oklahoma A&M stations provide supporting radar networks.

Chanute banks and the Building and Loan Association will close Monday in observance of Lincoln's Birthday Anniversary introduced the preceding day. Missing Youth's Body Found in Wrecked Car

The body of Glen Eldon Kruger 18 of Sol dier Kansas was found in his wrecked car five miles west of here. He had been missing since last Saturday and sheriff deputies said he was killed instantly when his car plunged into a deep ditch on State Highway 16.

Kansas City Kans. P Ray C Terrill, Lawrence operator of a chain of variety stores, surrendered to begin serving a year long sentence for federal income tax evasion.
