A porch light drive in Erie raised about $450 in 30 minutes for the March of Dimes. Mrs. Thichard Salb, city polio fund chairman, reported that Hi Lo Bridge Club members provided transport and Scouts did door to door work. Reds Down Navy Skyraider in Tachen Islands Evacuation
A U S Navy AD Skyraider was shot down by Formosa Communist antiaircraft batteries during the Tachen Islands evacuation. Lt. JG W J O’Heren and two crewmen ditched four miles west of the Tachens and were rescued with minor injuries. The incident was not deemed hostile as the plane apparently misnavigated. Separately the last civilian evacuees were led from the Tachens to Formosa, with 12 900 civilians removed and 3 753 islanders departing Keelung for resettlement centers. The Reds maintained gun coverage around the clock as the operation proceeded.
