Furious Legislative Pace To End Session by Monday

Kansas lawmakers rushed to finish the budget session by Monday with a key $12.5 million county payment delay bill advancing in the House after Senate approval. House Slashes $800000 From Tech School Bill

TOPEKA AP The Kansas House Ways and Means Committee cut more than 800000 from Senate approved state aid for area vocational schools leaving 700000. It barred using state funds for building costs and limited equipment and operation funding. The panel approved park and prison facility spending and adjusted Milford Reservoir funding. It also backed a 30 cent liquor tax hike and a 2 cent cigarette tax rise to fund programs, with final agreement needed on sheriffs and treasurers term limits.

Police said a Friday night attack aimed to strangler a 16 year old sophomore. Georgia Ellis collapsed at a doorway seeking help as two nylon stockings were knotted around her neck. She recovered in hospital. In eastern Massachusetts, 11 unsolved stranglings of women have occurred in the past 20 months.

Humboldt Cubs Win Behind Bedside Coach In Hospital

Wins in Red Ed Hawkins successfully coached his undefeated Humboldt Cubs to their 13th consecutive basketball win last night using a long distance telephone line from his bed at Neo Sho Memorial Hospital. Hankins, confined to the hospital, received a running account and spoke to players between quarters while assistant Darrell Divine managed the team. Humboldt defeated Eure ka 68 to 32.

United States tightens Cuban economic squeeze over Guantanamo
