Chanute public library reports January circulation up from 1954 with 4 242 books checked out by patrons led by 1 713 fiction and 310 non fiction for children and 1 471 fiction and 748 non fiction by adults.
Four persons died in Kansas weekend traffic accidents. In Sed an a two car collision on U S Highway 166 killed Hullit Nelson Fuller his two year old son Jimmy and 20 year old Joe Willoughby all residents of Arkansas City Sedan and Willoughby. In De Soto 19 year old Kenyon Merle Rose was killed when his car struck a Santa Fe train at a crossing while en route to church.
The Kansas House adopted a resolution allowing Dr. Forrest C. Phog Allen to coach basketball at the University of Kansas beyond the normal retirement age. The measure, signed by 74 of 125 members, would let him coach until June 30, 1959 if he wishes.
The Kansas Oklahoma water flood operators hold a meeting at 6 30 p m February 16 at the Booth Hotel Independence. L L Brundred of Climax Molybdenum Co Tulsa will discuss the economics of waterflooding. Dinner reservations close at 10 a m Monday.
The Toronto dam construction will be discussed this afternoon at the Verdigris River Conservation and Flood Association annual meeting. J A Lyons of Fredonia, association president, says delegates to flood control hearings in Washington will also be selected.
Federal funds totaling 16242.04 have been allotted to four Neosho county districts for the 1955 fiscal year. St Paul 103 receives 5827.08 with 3787 certified, Erie 105 receives 4944.64 with 3246 certified, Galesburg 107 receives 2973 with 1932 certified, and Thayer 106 receives 2497.38 with 1623 certified. Chanute is ineligible under current formula. further payments may be adjusted.
The statewide American Legion Service Officers School closed at noon after morning panels on veterans affairs. Speakers from National American Legion Headquarters warned that well funded groups seek to reduce veterans benefits through legislation while veterans organizations must protect those with service connected disabilities. Local panels featured Dr. William Bass and Wayne Jones former Chanute schoolmen, with Harry Smyth giving a humorous talk at the Saturday banquet. Bad weather cut attendance by about fifty percent.
In Cushing Oklahoma Elvin Gale Earnest, 17, skidded his car into a creek and plunged 20 feet. He was hurled through the windshield and landed on his feet with only bruises. Deputy Lee Stiles noted nothing serious beyond minor foot bruises.
Col. W. O. Beane of Norfolk Va ejected from a T33 near San Antonio Texas when his trainer ran low on fuel. He hovered in 7000 feet winds for 35 minutes as updrafts and weather kept him aloft. A rancher found him after he landed in a tree with only scratches and bruises.
Ike Jones after release from Neosho Memorial Hospital was arrested on a state charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. The incident stems from a January 24 fight with Henry Fields at 15 N Malcolm with Jones slashing Fields and Fields shooting Jones. Fields remains jailed in Evie district court on $10,000 bond awaiting trial. Jones’ preliminary hearing is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday in city court.
A bill by Rep. Paul Wolf would require vehicle assessment receipts to license and sell vehicles, aimed at stopping tax evasion and saving counties money. It also expands health insurance company coverage and directs laws to county libraries, with other local fiscal measures.
The Public Welfare Committee of the Legislative Council found no current need for aging legislation in Kansas. It urged greater public awareness of elder issues and emphasized non governmental groups taking lead roles, citing rising numbers of Kansans age 65 plus from 184 218 in 1950 to 211 676 in 1954 with projections to 289 646 by 1975.
President Eisenhower sent Senate nominations for Kansas postmasters including Irvin L. Magner of Galesburg Alfred H. Martens of Hepler Harry W. Arnold of LeRoy and Melvin L. Butler of Fulton.

About 40 youths start a residential fund drive for the Teen Canteen led by Rev. William E. West with a 7 to 9 p m kickoff. Jim Hutton and Dave Patton oversee the effort as plans for a second drive unfold and membership aims rise to over 300 with a chance for a new television set upon success.
Two Baltimore County firemen died early today when the roof of a burning house collapsed on them, authorities reported. Fire crews were battling a blaze when the fatal collapse occurred, ending the responders' efforts at the scene.
In Kansas City a lithographing firm suffered extensive damage from a robbery a fire and a flood. Robbers entered the Commercial Lithographing Co. via a rear window and forced a safe. A fire damaged a copying camera and set off sprinklers flooding the one story plant. Loss from the fire is placed between 7 000 and 8 000 dollars with additional money missing from the Casey Drug Co.
Scattered light snow continues in the northeast while most of Kansas warms. Tonight lows dip to the 20s with 30s to 50s tomorrow, as sunshine returns in western areas. Yesterday's highs ranged 28 to 36 and lows from eight below zero to the 20s.
The Senate Labor Committee unanimously approved a bill granting full GI educational rights to servicemen who joined the armed forces on or before January last year.
The Red Cross blood mobile from Wichita will visit Neosho County March 2 4 with Chanute and Erie as collection sites. Chanute seeks 150 pints daily and Erie 100 pints with 12 to 5 15 pm hours first day and 9 am to 2 15 pm second day at Chanute 9 am to 2 15 pm at Erie. County recruitment chiefs urge pre arranged appointments and car pools, stressing ongoing quarterly collections and broad rural participation.
U S 7th Fleet ships and carrier planes aided the evacuation of 30 600 Nationalist soldiers and civilians from the Tachens amid shelling by Communist guns and torpedo boats. Marines went ashore to assist as minesweepers and U S demolition teams scouted the icy waters. Tropical weather and dim dawn light framed the tense operation as Chiang Kai-shek termed the move a prelude to counterattack.
Police records show two noninjury motor vehicle incidents on Saturday. Sandra Cook's car hit the rear of Charles Henshall's at Main and Grant, while Robert E. Hosack and Mrs. Robert Briley sustained front fender and bumper damage as Briley pulled from a curb at 112 BE, 8rd. Hosack traveled west on Third.
A early morning fire at Arizona Downs Race Track in Phoenix destroyed 24 stalls and killed thirteen horses. Firefighters battled the blaze. cause under investigation. Local authorities cordon off the site as track officials assess damage and losses.
