Punxsutawney Phil, the usual groundhog weather forecaster, did not see his shadow this year. The absence of a shadow signals an end to winter weather, a first in 20 years of tradition.
A mounted posse is being organized in Miami County in cooperation with the sheriff's office. Wayne Herron chairs the independent group, which will be limited to 30 members and may assist in searches traffic and crowd control. The posse will also appear in parades horse shows and other events.

Mrs. Mary Jo Kopechne mother and her husband Joseph Kopechne were injured when their car swerved to avoid a deer, ran down an embankment and flipped onto its side in the Pocono Mountains. Mrs. Kopechne is in satisfactory condition at Monroe General Hospital Stroudsburg. her husband suffered cuts and bruises.
National Park Service allocations in the president's budget to Congress include Kansas Fort Scott National Historical Area 67000 dollars Jefferson National Expansion Memorial 700000 dollars Ozarks National Scenic Rivers 40000 dollars.
The Pentagon requested 19,000 men to be drafted in March with all going to the Army. The total expected drafts for the year are 225,000, down from 290,000 in 1969, averaging about 18,700 per month.

Mrs Florentine Donaldson and late husband ran the store since 1953. son Bob Donaldson will stay as assistant manager. Interim manager Charles Gillette. Store will keep current site while seeking a modern facility.

Mississippi added seven districts without incident, Louisiana parishes opened smoothly, while Alabama saw small demonstrations. The Mississippi Supreme Court petition and Florida officials’ actions shaped the wider response.
In Saigon Allied forces say they killed over 500 enemy troops during the weekend. They also report 21 American and 20 South Vietnamese dead with 160 Americans and 99 South Vietnamese wounded.
