Mrs. George C. Crockatt, a Chanute teacher, received a California call offering $100 if she placed a newspaper ad. A girl’s voice identified with Truth or Consequences urged the ad be run and repeated the exact wording. Ad appeared in the paper, but telephone operators later had no recollection of the call.
Erie residents raised 384.33 for the March of Dimes in a Thursday night porchlight parade. Mrs. Gertrude Salb chaired the campaign with help from the American Legion and Auxiliary and local children. The city whistle opened the event and 30 minutes of block-system collection concluded at Legion HQ. Refreshments followed.
Army physicians at Walter Reed Hospital report Prince Mashhur, 34 year old son of King Saud, appears to have cerebral palsy. The prince, partially paralyzed since birth, is in the presidential suite undergoing examination. Doctors in Saudi Arabia have been unable to confirm a diagnosis.
The United Nations General Assembly moved into a weekend session to push a plan for Israeli troop withdrawal from Egypt and to maintain peace in the Middle East. Egypt and Israel must both approve before any action, with UNEF forces to observe the armistice line after withdrawal. Canada dissented on specifics after a shooting clash between Israeli troops and UNEF Swedes with no casualties reported.
In Detroit a traffic court session was interrupted after the defense accused a witness of misidentifying Mrs. Margaret Rice. Five women resembled Rice as the defendant in a stop sign crash that injured a woman. Prosecution asked for a week to locate new witnesses.
Kansas accident records show 2 fatalities in the last 24 hours. To date in 1957, 34 deaths, compared with 49 in the same period in 1956.
Sen Mundt defended Secretary of Defense Wilson calling him capable and to judge him by performance. Wilson denied intent to offend when remarking some young men enlisted in the National Guard faced easier service. He praised guardsmen's contributions but kept Eisenhower’s “unwise” remark in context and expected questioning after a Florida vacation.
Floyd Wilson, serving a life term for a murder, disappeared on Alcatraz last July and was found hiding near the shore twelve hours later. A federal jury later found him innocent of attempting to escape. He claimed escape was impossible due to not swimming and said he sought parole attention. A school science fair planning committee was formed with Bob Baughn as chair and included Charlene Galt Leroy Mathews. The meeting discussed signs for the fair and movable exhibit backings. A second committee led by John York arranged collapsible masonite folders to individualize exhibits for next year. Phyllis Solomon will arrange a field trip to the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital before its open house. Members recently toured local Oilfield Research Laboratories with sponsor Don Shively guiding the plant.
John E. Kirchner new Democratic state director of revenue aims to streamline the agency to save about 20 000 dollars monthly by consolidating revenue field staff and possibly eliminating 25 to 30 jobs. He would place office services under one section and cut costs further by about 5 000 dollars monthly. The tax agency now employs 128 field staff with about 75 on the road across counties. reductions are tied to territory consolidation. Dismissal notices are expected within two weeks to help the commission stay within its budget for the fiscal year.
The Associated Press reports North Alabama faces flooding as the Warrior and Coosa Rivers rise toward crest, while four Southern states begin mop up after floods killed 14 and caused extensive damage. East Tennessee recovers as a cool air mass arrives. relief crews move into Kentucky Virginia and West Virginia. President Eisenhower declares disaster areas in parts of Kentucky and West Virginia. Red Cross head Gruenther plans a plane inspection of West Virginia Virginia and Kentucky flood zones with half a million dollars allotted for relief.
Chicago police renewed searches near Barbara Grimes 15 and Patricia Grimes 13's home as the Bedwell confession frays. Bedwell, 21, an illiterate skid row drifter, has recanted a signed statement claiming he and a companion killed the sisters on January 13. Medical evidence and acquaintances support his claim the confession was false.

Topeka reports a draft wage bill with no author surfaced, listing the Senate Labor Committee as sponsor though Sen. John Murray says it should be stricken. The measure would deduct privately financed unemployment benefits from state benefits, affecting jobless workers. Other bills aim to spur industry, boost school fund bonds, and ease handicapped hiring, with proposals to allow partial wages while preserving unemployment benefits.
A 1954 Packard sustained rear and left-side damage after a one-vehicle crash at the K47 and US 59 intersection south of here around 7:15 a.m. No injuries were reported. Edwin L. Burke of Wichita drove the car, which skidded and struck a tree near a cemetery after failing to navigate the three-way junction. The vehicle is owned by Hazel Mitchell of Pittsburg, a passenger in Burke’s car.
Over three days seven American aircraft crashed at home and abroad, killing 38 and injuring more than 150. Incidents included two B29s colliding near St Lo. a Northeast DC6 crash onto Rikers Island with 20 dead. a Gloucester B47 in the Atlantic. a Mountain View F84 into a home. and a Van Nuys DC7 and jet colliding in flight, plus a second commercial crash near Tulsa earlier in 1957.
King Saud of Saudi Arabia lengthens stay in Washington for further talks with U S officials on Middle East issues. Officials say discussions with President Eisenhower remain cordial. Saud attends a dinner with Eisenhower, praises UN peace efforts, and plans another meeting with the President next week. He will visit Annapolis for a Naval Academy luncheon and a Navy versus Duke basketball game.
Light drizzle is forecast over most of Kansas including Topeka with cloudy skies through Sunday. Tonight and Sunday high 35 to 40, lows 35, dropping after tonight. Traces of precipitation possible Friday, fog in many areas, temperatures mostly above freezing central and east. Highs yesterday ranged 31 in Topeka to 53 in Garden City.
In Mobile Alabama two local grocers waged a chicken price war driving fryer prices down to two cents a pound. Greer's and Serda's alternated pricing with Greer's selling about 18 000 birds and Serda's around 1 140 fryers at the lowest price. The contest drew housewives to buy more poultry as deals fluctuated.
Readings indicate yesterday's water use at 1,262,000 gallons, with prior day 1,173,000 and year-ago 1,354,000. In the past week the city logged 8,408,000 gallons, slightly below the previous seven days at 8,420,000.
Nine children remain in critical condition after a collision involving a Pacoima Junior High School area crash. Seven people died, sixteen others, mostly boys, hospitalized with varying injuries. Curtiss A. Adams, 27, of Palmdale, the radar operator on the F89 jet, survived his burns after parachuting. the jet's pilot and all four transport crew members perished.
Dr. William C. Menninger, a renowned psychiatrist from Topeka, told Iowa legislators that care in state mental institutions is atrocious. He urged prioritizing qualified personnel over new buildings, stating the need to buy brains before bricks. Representatives Stevens and Goode defended current conditions.
Six government agencies plus FBI joined the investigation into the Northeast Airlines DC6A crash after La Guardia departure in a snowstorm. Twenty people died, 64 were hospitalized, and the plane wreckage fell on Rikers Island near Queens and the Bronx. The pilots survived and cited a possible wing ice or pole strike as the cause.
WICHITA Kansas Turnpike officials allowed pilot Jack Wilson to take off from the toll road after landing on the turnpike and taxiing six miles to the Matfield Green service area. Officials warned the incident must not set a precedent and required options including dismantling the plane or moving to an adjoining field with fence work. Gale Moss the turnpike general manager approved a stakeoff from the access ramp at the service area.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sprague of 1021 S. Stueben were arrested at 14th and Steuben on DUI and intoxication charges. They posted bonds of 125 and 15 dollars and a hearing was scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday.
