Fire damages Chanute area farm home
The Don Friederich Jr. residence southwest of Chanute was damaged by a fire today. Chanute firefighters extinguished the blaze, the run starting at 12 15 p.m. and returning to the station at 1 15. Fire officials said flames likely spread from a wood stove flue burning inside a wall. no damage estimate was available. The house sits two miles west of the municipal airport and about 2 3 4 miles south.

Two Trials For Students In Fire at State Auditorium
Manhattan Kansas AP Dist Judge Lewis McLaughlin granted separate trials for Kansas State University students charged with setting the fire that destroyed the 60 year old auditorium. Larry D. Sayer 22 and William F. Shaw 19 both of Kansas City Kansas waived arraignment and pleaded innocent. They were arrested Jan 18 three days after the blaze. Each is free on 5000 dollar bond. They were suspended from classes and returned to their homes. Shaw's attorney John Stites said publicity could affect the other trial. Shaw has not made a formal statement.
