R J Hayes praised Chanute's first impressions including friendly residents and attractive neighborhoods. He noted planned Main Street traffic light upgrades, delayed by parts-supply sale, and cited New Year resolutions as a light, humorous survey of local quotes before year 1958.
Mid-America Inc announces Dale Painter executive vice president of First National Bank joins board of trustees along with five others. The 20-member board includes Rees Hughes Louis Schwinn W C Cavert Howard Gilpin and C A McCullough as new appointees from Pittsburg Coffeyville Independence Iola Neodesha. W H Caldwell will become executive vice president. Headquarters are in Parsons.
The 1958 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena will feature a real king, King Edward Masinga of South Africa, joining as a guest of the State Department. A queen will appear as usual in make believe form.
William Splane and Alfred Ogle were each sentenced to thirty days in jail in city court. Splane admitted giving liquor to a minor on December 18 and was arrested yesterday. Ogle admitted passing a three dollar no account check on December 23. Both men also paid five dollars in court costs.
Lexington Missouri. A blaze swept three two story buildings housing J C Penney Co Davidow's Furniture Co and Rush Ford Drug Co beyond control four hours after discovery. Firefighters from Lexington and Richmond battled the 20 degree temperatures as losses topped 50 000 in stock and fixtures for each business with the building valued at about 100 000.
Chester Decker 62 of Pleasant Hill Missouri was hospitalized with a back injury after his car and a second vehicle driven by Larry Dean Richwine 18 collided at Main and Lincoln Richmond reported. Richwine was turning left from Main to Lincoln as Decker crossed Lincoln. A witness said the light was green for both and Richwine stopped at impact. The crash occurred at 6 43 pm.
Hollywood report says Ciros, a favorite after dark hangout, resumes operations Monday after interior redecoration. The library board notes no fines will be charged on due books while the reopening is delayed to finish painting as part of a Hollywood set.
Santa Monica California comedian Red Skelton survived a severe asthmatic attack that caused heart failure. His wife Georgia and a rescue team rushed him to St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica where doctors said he was sleeping and progressing satisfactorily though still serious.
Three Erie youths waived preliminary hearing and were bound over to District Court on a theft charge at the Eagles Club three miles south of Chanute. Bond set at 1000 for Sherman U Wallman 17 and Gerald Purdy 22 and 2000 for Robert Suits 17. All remain jailed. Theft involved five cases of beer and two boxes of cigars reported December 20.
The Chanute trade area restarts the annual Stork Derby at midnight with gifts for the first baby born in 1958. Eligibility requires birth after midnight, local parents, and birth details submitted to the Baby Page Editor at The Tribune. 1957 winner was Tisha Lynn Stanlick born January 1 at 10 37 a.m.
F E Davis of 1102 West reports a break in at 1225 South Garfield damaging a vacant rental. Water faucets in the bathroom were broken and a kitchen faucet spout swung. Keys were broken off in two doors, police said.
The Chamber of Commerce board opposed two congressional bills that would limit the good faith defense in Robinson-Patman Act price discrimination charges. Members met at Tioga Hotel, voting to support the present law. President Oscar Cunningham warned retail merchants would lose bargaining power with suppliers if the bills passed. New directors elected were Dr. L. B. Venhaus, Richard Evans, and D. M. Franks.
A wintry system swept north central and northeastern Kansas causing freezing rain sleet and up to four inches of snow. Highways were slick leading to numerous accidents and at least three fatalities. Forecasters expect colder conditions with a possible warming trend later this week.
Kenneth D. Stroup aged 24 of 17 East 8th was fitted for a fireman’s uniform in preparation for city employment starting tomorrow. Fire Chief C. W. Brennan noted Stroup’s prior work with the state highway department and in LaBette County and the Navy. He will be assigned to the township fire truck.
A fire at the Ralston Purina Co. feed mill in Kansas City caused estimated damage of $100,000. No injuries were reported.
Eighteen climbers battled deep snow on Pikes Peak to reach the summit for a midnight New Year Eve celebration.

Highlights include Harold C Urey on war prevention George S Meany on peace and freedom Albert Szent Gyorgyi on cross cultural understanding Donald W Douglas Sr. on confidence in America and Edwin T Dahlberg urging universal disarmament.

Four deaths in Kansas and Missouri were blamed on icy roads as a major snow storm hit the region. The storm left a 4 inch cover in Kansas City area with flurries continuing and temperatures dropping. Victims included Patricia Ann Thomson and Louis Thompson Jr from St Louis, plus several other fatal crashes across Kansas and Nebraska. Forecasters warned hazardous driving and urged tire chains for trucks in northeastern Kansas.
City gas crews repaired leaks at 108 S Malcolm and at 3rd and Steuben, part of a drive that has fixed about 40 leaks in the past period. City manager R J Hayes urged residents to report suspected leaks and noted crews cannot cover every foot. Officials say signs include dying grass or ground spots from fumes.
Virgil J. Johnson, 45, of Larned died four miles east of Bucklin yesterday when a grading machine overturned on him. He worked for Bruce & Smith Construction Co. of Liberal.
