In San Fernando Chile two Uruguayan rugby players Roberto Canessa and Fernando Parrado found a way down from the 12,000 foot wreck and guided rescuers to lift the remaining 16 survivors from the plane. The incident left 29 dead from the Oct crash with eight more killed by avalanche. Survivors endured two months by rationing food and melting snow, with eight airlifted to a Chilean hospital and eight awaiting rescue at the site.
